iPhone 3G and 3GS & iPhone 4 LCD replacement repair - Usually done in less than an hour if you bring it by or can be flown out the same day fixed if you send it.
Occasionally... very occasionally someone breaks the LCD in their iPhone. This is typically when the thing has been dropped so hard the upper glass/digitizer is pierced and strikes into the LCD breaking it. Less frequently they have to be replaced from water damage.
The LCD rests on a steel backplate behind the upper glass and digitizer. It has two protruding pins that fasten into the steel bed to make its position fixed and relative to the digitizer. The LCD presents color information which you react to with your finger tip on the upper glass. The two parts must over lap perfectly or your finger will not "operate" or "manage" the programs and their information the through the LCD.
Again, the digitizer interprets your finger movements relative to the icons and screens presented on the iPhone's LCD and makes the iPhone operate.
Here are examples of what a broken LCD only would look like:
iPhone 3G - The LCD replacement repair for the iPhone 3G is a a flat $65.
if you need the upper Glass/digitizer *and* the LCD replaced for the 3G model it is a flat $80. Only rarely (when something has fallen onto and through the upper glass) do you need both.
iPhone 3GS - The LCD replacement repair for the iPhone 3GS is a a flat $74. The LCD for the 3GS is a fairly expensive part at $45
If you need the upper Glass/digitizer *and* the LCD replaced for the 3GS model it is a flat $89. Only rarely (when something has fallen onto and through the upper glass) do you need both.
iPhone 4 Model - Let's get some distressing news, out of the way.
I *do* replace the smashed front screens on iPhone 4 models. The replacement takes about 45 minutes, considerably longer than the 3G and 3GS. It is also considerably more expensive.
The iPhone 4 Front smashed glass replacement is $125.
The iPhone 4 has a few things going on that may not be obvious when you get it.
1) The Retina Display introduces some problems. The display has 4 times more resolution than the 3G/3GS. In order to make it operate correctly Apple had to make the digitizer line up over the LCD perfectly, on a pixel for pixel basis. If they weren't lined up perfectly then the instance you getting the "D" instead of the "S" would be even much greater than it is already.
To make the digitizer (which interprets finger movement) to line up perfectly over the LCD so mistakes are minimized, Apple had the Upper Glass (the part your finger touches), the digitizer (the part that interprets finger movement on the upper glass) and LCD screen (which displays the color information you interact with... apps/icons) are all glued together.
Because those parts have to all be replaced together, the "screen repair" (which in the 3G/3GS meant upper glass and digitizer only) is much more expensive. It's $140
2) The other thing not obvious about the i4 is that it uses tempered glass on the front and back of the phone. Fire tempered glass is designed to break and then crumble away making the need to replace the broken glass more acute than the earlier 3G/3GS. In those models the device would work for quite a while with a crack in it. The new model has glass that begins to fall out after being smashed.
3) The i4 has been calculated, (because of the way it's constructed with a metal frame and tempered glass front and back) to be 5 times more likely to break the front glass than the 3GS in a casual drop.
The Front Upper Glass/Digitizer/LCD repair-replacement for the i4 is a flat $125 and it takes approximately 45 minutes.
The Back Glass repair-replacement for the i4 is a flat $53
If you need both repaired, *and* it's possible (the glass on the i4 is as fragile as a saltine cracker), call me, I may have a better idea to help you out.
Battery replacement for i4 is a flat $50
