Bethany McDermott emailed me from Orland, California.
This message was quite different from what I get typically,
"I see that you have a winning track record with repairing iPods, so I'm hoping that mine might not be a lost cause.
My 80GB video iPod (5th generation, late 2006 model) briefly fell into a pot of kernel corn with water on Tuesday, November 25 and hasn't worked since (we were out of town, so there was little that I could do for it until now). I wiped and shook what liquid I could from it immediately and then let it dry at room temperature (I did not open it, as you mention is necessary). While drying, the lower right-hand corner of it got hot to the touch. When I attempted to turn it on later, the screen flashed a few times and then went black and it's done nothing since. On Wednesday (the day after the corn incident), the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy said that it was dead and there was nothing that they could do for it since their computer didn't even recognize that it was there. At this point, when I plug it in with the USB connection it begins to make a high-pitched whining noise like it's thinking, but nothing else happens.
I really love my iPod and miss it horribly. Is there any hope for it, especially after so much time has passed?"
I sent her back a message describing how to send it in and received this back,
"I sent my iPod off in the mail today, so it should arrive soon. Regardless of the outcome, I appreciate you looking at it and trying to fix it; that's more than the Apple Store would do, even if I was willing to pay them. Their service in this type of situation is disappointing. What jerks!
Anyway, thanks again and I am anxiously waiting to hear if you can do anything for my musical buddy. I miss her so much!"
This one I wasn't able to make work. The corn starch had turned into sugars and that even after cleaning took down the logic board, LCD and hard drive. It's not clear if it getting here sooner would have made a difference. But she's right, I actually took the iPod apart and tested each part to make a viable determination. I don't know if anyone else would have taken these steps, but I have been known for this kind of detail for some time. If you have the chance read the Jason Rockhill story
She received her iPod back with a $20 refund and the absolute knowledge
there wasn't anything anyone could do.

Tim Leonard emailed me from Napa, California
on Wednesday December 3rd saying,
"Hi Frank,
Tim from Del Dotto vineyards again.
It seems that my wife has run my sons ipod thru the wash once again. Any chance you can bring it to life once more ???
I can drop it in the mail today.
Thanks tons !
Tim"
I told him to send it along and it arrived on Friday the 5th. I worked on it overnight and it was ready to send back on Saturday when Shane my postal carrier. Tim got it back on Monday morning.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Marc Stewart called me from Asheville, North Carolina
about his 60GB 5th Gen video. The scroll wheel was "on the fritz" and he felt needed to be replaced. This is rare to be true unless there is water damage. In my experience just one in 300 scroll wheel problems has anything to do with the scroll wheel.
In Marc's case it *was* the scroll wheel. The part was $16 and he used PayPal to pay for it. Notice I am deep in the menus which shows I've used the scroll to get down to the "About" Menu.
The labor/return was $40 so it was a $56 total.
He got his iPod back on December 10th 2008 and emailed this,
"Just received my iPod. It works great! Many thanks Frank.
Marc Stewart"
Fixed - Total cost $56.
