Jeff Schultz called me from Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania.
He found my site on the internet and felt I was the person to talk to about the problem he was having with his 5th Gen video iPod. The LCD had thin horizontal lines across it and formed a menu. I knew the problem with this was the vertical refresh rate had gone out on the LCD and he needed to have it replaced. I went over the steps on the phone and sent him a summary of the same things afterward by email.

It got here on December 2nd 2008 in the afternoon. I had it repaired and ready to send back later the same afternoon.

The LCD was $33 and labor/return shipping was $40

He actually me that next day to see if it had arrived and was naturally astonished to hear it had been, was repaired and on the way back to him already.

Fixed - Total cost $73.

Timothy Lim lives in San Jose, California
and had been having a particular problem with his 3rd Gen Nano. The center select button on the scroll wheel wasn't working. I had seen this once before only then it was the Menu button. I sent him back a message telling to send it in but prepare to have the faceplate and scroll wheel replaced.

It got here a few days later and he used PayPal to pay the $40 labor fee. I couldn't find anything observable... moisture damage or any other oddity. I wasn't sure if there wasn't a problem with the data port on the logic board, the operating system or the scroll wheel itself.

The easiest test was to replace the scroll wheel, that would rule out the port and OS possibilities. The new one worked, so it what had failed was the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) on it's ribbon connection but only control of one button had gone.

The scroll was $15 and labor/return shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost $55.

Yuri Reis called me from Oakland, California
about hearing from the left side only on his 5th Gen video iPod. From time he spent on the web site he knew I had experience in this problem. He called me just to see if it was practical to drive up and wait for me to do it.

I convinced him that it would take less money considering gas prices to merely mail it in. Plus he wasn't going to be able to make the drive for 4 days which was the total time from mailing it to me to receipt back fixed he could expect. He decided to mail it in.

He sent it with $68 in cash and I repaired it and sent it back on the same day.

Total cost for him to get his iPod back was $68. I noticed that his 60GB had just 3 GB of drive space left. This is a bad practice. You shouldn't load a hard drive to more than 85 or 90% full because irrecoverable data corruption can occur unless there is space to defragment the drive and map out of use bad blocks by the controller card.

I got a message from Yuri on December 8th that read,

"Hey, Frank, I got my iPod monday, thanks for the fixing, the sound is great and finally can enjoy my music again... : ) I will refer your services to as many people I can. Have a great week and a blessed holiday season.

Yuri."

Fixed - Total cost $68.
