Kevin Tan called me from Cerritos, California
about his White 5th Generation iPod. It had been immersed in water *and* it came with a broken screen. I was never able to make the logic board work again. That part would be $90 to replace along with the $33 LCD screen and the $40 labor/return shipping charge brought the repair to $163 while the device could be replaced with a new one for $169 by following my How to buy an iPod cheaply" link.
I sent it back un-repaired with a $20 on the $40 he sent.

Patricia Grady emailed from Cooperstown, New York
about her Nano 1st Generation. The message read,
"Good morning,
My iPod got wet while I was swimming (first day trying out an underwater iPod case - unsuccessfully). It wasn't submerged too long and I removed it as soon as I discovered the case had a leak. I could see water drops inside. I sat it in a bowl of rice for five days & now, there's no trace of the moisture inside that showed itself the first day. I just tried connecting it to my computer but there's no sign of life.
I'd like to have you repair it, or advise me whether or not you think you can."
She sent it the next day and used PayPal to send the $40 fee in. It arrived during that period when George was still with us after being found and to us 133 1/2 years after he went missing. It arrived and I got to it within the a day or so.
I was able to get it to work again perfectly. The total cost including return
shipping back to New York was $40.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

John Christensen called from Rochester, New York
about his iPod that was put through the washer. It arrived on November 19th 2008 and John decided to use PayPal to cover the $40 labor fee. John's iPod had two parts, one expensive that made repair of his iPod impractical. His LCD had a trace on the ribbon connection that was corroded away so it had to be replaced. That part would be $33. The other part I couldn't make work was the logic board which would be $90 to replace. Those parts and the labor/return shipping came to $163. Reading here you can see that a new replacement would cost as little as $169
I sent his iPod back un-repaired and refunded $20 of the $40 he sent in.
