Torrance Payseno sent his 3rd Generation Nano in from Lynnwood, Washington.
It was his daughter's iPod and another case of a new Nano going through the washing machine.

Once I took it apart and cleaned out the corrosion I was able to get all the aspects working, except the LCD screen.

In this model Nano the LCD screen is always has a connected positive leg on the ribbon connection with just the negative switched on and off. Because of that there is higher than average frequency of that positive connection corroding away and leaving the LCD without the ability to power the backlight even though the data paints to the screen.

This was a case of the LCD backlight not working due to that cause and I had to replace it.

The LCD was $33 which Torrance PayPal'd in. The labor/return shipping was $40.

Fixed - Total cost $73.

Lydia Kroninger sent me an iPod for repair last year from Troy, Michigan.
This time it was hers she sent in from Troy Missouri. It's a Pink Nano 2nd Gen. Due to repeated overcharging the battery fails to hold a charge.

It is my opinion that Apple never intended the Nano models to be repaired. They are built in such a way that getting into them is dicey and the space and opportunity for a battery replacement is difficult. It requires hand trimming of tiny leads and fine soldering techniques. Because it's so complex and laborious I charge a slightly higher labor rate of $55 to do that job.

Here is Lydia's fixed iPod. The battery was $15 and the labor was $55. All of her music and photos remained in the iPod.

Fixed - Total cost $55.

Victor Patron called me from Los Angeles, California
where he was working on the set of the CSI series. He is a set decorator which means he chooses the knick knacks and furnishings on the sets used in the show.

For all of you that are wondering, all three CSI shows are shot in Los Angeles. Once or twice a season the principle actors are jetted to the 'city' of the show where they shoot location exteriors for several episodes at one time.

As a film buff I naturally pointed out no police department would have the funds to chrome plate a Moratio's Hummer (much less buy one for a lab department). The plating of all the panels and polishing is a $60,000 expense per vehicle. And the continual polishing would be an expense the department would never be able to bear.

While at it I mentioned that 'uplight from the desk' shots in the LV version would never exist in reality nor would all the indirect dim Blue lighting. There is a reason that over head fluorescents are used in buildings.

Victor responded that there is much reality set design or set decorating on those shows. It's more about giving the audience the reality they expect rather than the one that exists in even well above average funded police departments.

Although he did mention Jorge Fox was coming back, he neglected to mention Billy was leaving (a good move, he needs to move on and we need to see him more in movies like "Kiss the Sky" and "To live and Die in LA"). He theorized that they surmounted the Jorge money issues by sliding a part of what they saved Gary Dourdan salary who was released because of moral turpitude issues.

All right back to Victors iPod, it's a 4th Gen Black and White iPod that has a smashed screen. I replaced the LCD and then noticed his battery is remarkably short lived so I call him and suggest replacing the battery. This time he's on the set of Transformers II but agrees since his battery has held only a 1 hour charge lately.

The LCD is $10 and the battery is $15 with labor/return shipping at $40

Vick got iPod back right away but had to wait a couple of days before he could send this message.

"Hi Frank..

I've just got time off from "Transformers 2" ( after 3 weeks of 16 hour days 6 days a week, with a few call times at 12:01AM till whenever....ouch..) to send this note of thanx.

The Ipod works great and the new batteries give it a whole new life! Your quick turnaround and honesty in diagnosing is quite refreshing. It's nice to know that there are still people with integrity out there.

Many mahalos for taking care of my little guy!!!!

Vick Patron"

Fixed - Total cost $65.
