Maureen Barrett called from Medfield, Massachusetts
to discuss the problem she was having with her 2nd Gen Nano. She had sent an iPod in for repair before and liked the result.
Her Nano had lost scroll wheel control. I realize that I'm the guy that many people send their iPods to for water exposure repair and that may shade my impression of the cause of a problem. Loss of scroll wheel control is almost always the result of corrosion on the scroll wheel ribbon connector.
In Maureen's case, she had actually suffered a legitimate failure of the Application Specific integrated circuit that controls the scroll wheel. I can't express how rare this is.
I had a replacement scroll/housing and was able to fix her get it sent back a day or so later.
The scroll/housing was $35 and the labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $75.

I got email from Analeisa Ecker in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania
one morning that read, "
Hello,
My boss dropped his 2nd Gen 8GB Nano into his pool.
He said it was only in there for a couple of seconds.
We have had it in a bag of rice for 4 days and tried to charge it up with no results. If the logic board is fried, is it worth fixing?
We are going to order a new one, but I'd like to find out if there is a chance of repairing it.

It arrived a few days later with a check for $40.
I was able to get it to work perfectly and the $40 covered all costs. So now he has a back up.
Notice that he is using MUCH less than 1 GB of space on his 8GB iPod. Americans are famous for over buying performance they will never need or use. He spent $250 for that Nano and could have gotten away with the 2GB model that sold for $150
Buy for the features you will actually use!!

Laurie Dalbey who works at "Do Not Call" (dnc.com) here in Santa Rosa called me.
A friend of her son had an iPod with a problem. She brought it in with her from Petaluma that morning and brought it over for me to check out. She didn't know what the problem was but gave me the son's friend's number so I could call him.
After speaking with Jake, it turns out he 'grazed files' (collected several at a time illegally) from a number of sources and no there was no data connectivity. The device wouldn't play, the memory was corrupt and it wouldn't restore.
I was able to get a Macintosh to see the device and format with a Mac file format. At that point I knew it worked I just needed to get it formatted back to a Windows format. I found some problems with the docking port and corrected them and then was able to get the Windows (FAT32) format to occur.
I mailed it back to him the next day.
Fixed - Total cost $40.
