I got a call from Martin Cooper who lives in Napa, California
and called to get his worked one day. As we discussed the problem, he defined it as having hearing from the left side only. We set something up where he could bring it in for me to repair the headphone jack.
He arrived on a Saturday at 3:30 in the afternoon. About half an hour later after replacing the headphone
jack twice that the problem with his iPod was the logic board was de-laminated. This iPod had been gifted
to him by his room mate and now I knew the reason why.
Instead of being a $68 headphone problem this had now turned into a $130 logic board replacement.
Martin was a local mall shopping when I explained what had happened. With a trembling voice he said
to replace the logic board. No one is ever really ready to hear things were worse than expected.
At 5PM I had it ready for him. The logic board was $90 and labor was $40. He was genuinely
pleased to have a working iPod of his own. He had appropriated his son's iPod to use and could now give it back to him.
Fixed - Total cost $130.

George Cabra called me from San Francisco, California
to discuss the failed drive in his 80Gb 5th Gen video iPod. He dropped it one time too many and was now looking for a way to bring it back to life. I laid out alternative versions. He could get the 80GB drive replaced as new for $90. He could get a 60GB version for $80 or he could get a 30GB drive for $60.
In our discussion he mentioned his entire iTunes Library was a nudge past 30GB. I always council people to get the
smallest drive practical. Without his realizing it, the dual platter 80GB he had was at least 6 times more likely
to be permanently damaged from a drop because of the 4 read/write heads and the large cantilevered armature.
He settled on the 30GB and sent the $100 which was $60 for the drive and $40 for labor using PayPal
while his iPod was in the mail to me.
I had it repaired and sent back the same day it arrived.
Fixed - Total cost $100.

It had been dropped in water. It arrived on February 25th 2009 by 2 days later I was able to get all working again perfectly.
Fixed - Total cost $60.
