Taylor Duthler of Sacramento, California
had her grandmother Sharon Murray send in her 6th Generation video iPod from Penn Valley, California

She first sent me an email about the problem which read,

"Hello,

My name is Sharon and I live near Grass Valley...I found you on the internet...

Here's my problem.

My granddaughter dropped her I-Pod on a cement step and of course, it's not working now!

It is a 80gig nano classic......We're suspecting the hard drive might have been killed...What is your opinion on repairing this.... First we would have to know what's wrong and then decide if the cost of repairing it is worth it... Any ideas..

Thanks so much

Sharon.."

It was the drive that had failed. I described dropping a hard drive based iPod as committing hard drive murder. They are too frail to be dropped many times... or... danced with vigorously as Apple TV spots have shown for years.

Sharon sent in $60 via PayPal to cover the cost of a 30GB replacement drive.

The total repair was $100

Fixed - Total cost $100.

Ed Karpowitz emailed me from Waterford, Wisconsin about his 4th Generation Nano. The message read,
"Hello Frank,

I stumbled on your website while looking for info on repairing a waterlogged Ipod. I left mine in my pocket and it went through the wash 2 days ago. So here is what I know so far.

I plugged it into my PC and it does sync fine. The itunes program recognizes it and shows the amount of memory used.

The backlighting on the screen is gone, but I can still see it faintly if I shine a light on it. The scroll wheel does seem to do what it should but the buttons don't respond as easily.

The image is upside down and mirror imaged.

It does play fine so no apparent damage as far as the audio is concerned.

When tilted, the faint screen image does flip so I don't beleive the tilt sensor is shot.

If you think it can be fixed, I will put it in the mail tomorrow. Please let me know via email and I will pack it up with payment.

Thanks......Ed"

He sent it and his was an arduous case. I never want to replace a part unnecessarily, and I had it here for 6 days while I continued to sort out a problem with it before I was able to fix it. This is the message I sent him on that,

"Ed,

I continued to work on it over the week end.

The obstacle I was dealing with was the battery recharging. I was able to get it working last night.

It needed a new LCD. That part is $33. I'll send a PayPal request for that. Cover that and I can have it on the way back to you this afternoon.

Frank"

He sent in the $33 and it went working perfectly. Total cost $73

Fixed - Total cost $73.
