Michelle Rennie called from Washington DC
where she works for "The Magazine Group" which includes CDW magazine, ED Tech, Hemaware, Web MD, Protfolio, Vision, BizTech, and Lupis Now.

Her 1st Gen had a swimming pool mishap and needed my water exposure attention. She sent it in with 2 $20 bills and hope. She confirmed her shipment to me in the message,

"Frank - Nice speaking with you today and I am glad to hear that pool water isn't that hard on the iPod. AARP is definitely a force to be reckoned with! Given the rapidly aging baby boomer population, the organization is poised to be a "world order" -- but we shall see. Anyway, continue to enjoy your "paradise on earth" Frank. Here's another way to reach once you have received my iPod. Regards -- Michelle"

The iPod arrived on July 31st, with a note reading, "Please find enclosed my sick iPod which I mistakenly took into the pool with me last Sunday. I have enclosed your nominal of $40 which when told to other iPod owners was regarded in disbelief. I am the 'test-dummy' of sorts. From the images of your website, the winery and the abode(s) you live in nothing short of paradise to a city girl like me! I believe a man like you, surrounded by nature's beauty can only be true at heart."

Later that day I had it working again perfectly with no replacement parts needed. All of here songs and the 10 photos were still there.

Total cost to get her iPod back working after it proved the iPod couldn't swim was $40

Fixed - Total cost..$40.

Chaz Kussoy sent me an email one day from San Francisco, California
it read like this discussing his 5th Gen video iPod.

"I have a fifth generation IPOD classic that needs an ambulance. The first symptom was a message to go to the apple support site and at first, I couldn't get rid of the message. Now, that message is gone but it crashes my computer and my gfs computer every time I hook it up. I have the latest itunes, windows vista updates and it still crashes the computer."

Before I could respond to the email in the morning (which came in overnight) I got a phone call which proved to be from him.

It was a strange call. People frequently mistake me and my work for that of Apple itself. I get and inordinate amount of calls each day from people believing they have reached Apple's technical support division (or pray that they have because I answer as a live human in 3 rings and the last they were on with Apple, they had to be on hold for 50 minutes before they got a human).

Chaz's phone call had that "I'm seeking Apple technical support" aspect but heard him out and realized he had found my number on the internet and desperately wanted a lead to solving his iPod's problem.

I sent an iAmbulance to retrieve his iPod and he sent the $40 labor fee in via PayPal.

After analyzing it on a couple of systems it lead me to what I thought which was a very weak drive that would boot correctly sometimes, but on Vista it would not boot fast enough to acknowledge the USB connection's "polling" as to the device type and would time out remaining off line. Formatting the drive made no difference and it had to be replaced.

The drive was $60 and the the labor/return/shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost $100.

Steve Childers called from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
explaining that he had dropped his 5th Generation video iPod in a lake over the weekend of July 13th 2008. I emailed him the instructions to send it in and it arrived days later.

After going through it I was able to get all of it to work except the hard drive.

It was another case of diligence and effort but I am motivated by challenges like this.

The replacement drive was $60 and Labor/return shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost..$100.
