When I was 9, I started to do black and white photos with a 35mm viewfinder camera. I don't know who made it. It was extraordinary, it was probably a Yashica or Asahi. That lead my step-father to build me a darkroom in our garage so that I could develop and print the shots.
Throughout your life you fade in and out of hobbies, some times all the way out, but photography has been a constant. I studied it in High School and then took classes in college. I even considered a career in photography but respected it enough to leave it as a passion instead of work.
Today, my camera kit includes
1) a terrific Canon F-1N in perfect condition. I bought it new in 1980 and it has no brassing. I've got a number of lenses and use this mainly to shoot Black and white shots
2) a Canon eos-2 with a number of L-Series lenses. I have a 600mm Tele, a 17mm to 28mm wide angle (non-fish eye) zoom, a 70 to 110 zoom, a fixed 50mm that came with it, and 100 macro lens.
3) a Canon D30 which uses the same lenses as my eos-2
4) a Canon PowerShot SD430 as a quick snapshot, point and shoot camera.
Some of my shots hang at a local Starbucks and they are also around the house here and the vacation rental I have.
Here are a few examples of things I've done:
"Sunset Vines"

"Monterey Bay"

"Crush Day"
