Recent Fixes

These are a few my recent camera repair experiences.
There are two brothers that live here in Sonoma County
His brother Angelo is a genius at smoked and preserved meats, think... jerky, sausages, smoked turkeys, beef and pork. Angelo's Meats is well known in the area. He sells on a call in mail order basis a number of other preserved products including, pasta sauce, marinara, italian BBQ sauce, stuffed olives, spice mixes and beef Jerky.

Angelo and Art come from Genoa Italy, which is where my Grandmothers family came from... well technically a small town called Lavinia a nudge south. My grandmother's family is the Zurlo's here in Sonoma County and my grandfather's family came from Sasaferrato on the Adriactic side of Italy and their last name is Crinella.

Angelo broke the LCD on his Kodak digital camera. He keeps it in his pocket almost all the time and errantly had it turned with the LCD facing out and bumped into something smashing it. He contacted Kodak about a replacement LCd and got the part. Then he called me.

He found me on the internet and we chatted on the phone for a bit about our families. When he came by to frop of the camera and part to be replaced, he realized I was also a solidly award winning wine maker so we then started talking about his grappa which he wants to sell commercially. Grappa is a fragrant grape-based pomace brandy of between 50% and 80% alcohol by volume (100 to 160 proof), of Italian origin.

Even though I haven't wanted to turn my wine making passion into a career (so far) I know the people to help arrange getting an ABC license and make sure that you are in compliance. Alcohol is one of the few things in the US commerce stream that there no conformity on how, where and how much can be sold. In order to overturn the Prohibition, the federal government ceded to each state the right to create their own laws on how alcohol products could be distributed and sold. The structure for the laws and its enforcement was built before telephones were common, much less personal computers and the internet and the structure in place favors wholesale distributors while picking the pockets of the consumers. Think about the fact, that in Tennessee, you can go to a grocery store to buy the making for your meal but have to go to a separate store to buy wine. If you want beer or ale, that is a store separate from the wine store and so is the distilled spirits store. None of these three alcohol retail establishments have common hours of operation and not all of them can be open on all days. If you live in Tennessee, in the county that makes Jack Daniel's Whiskey you can't even buy alcohol because it is a 'dry' county. This obligates residents of the Lynchburg/Moore County area to drive to the next county to drink and there is a higher percentage driving drunk back into the area late each night than elsewhere.

Alcohol sales really needs to be taken back over by the federal government.

I sent Angelo my contacts on alcohol compliance by email, a day later I had his ready to pick up.

I charge $60 to work on a camera, because I have to learn about each of them newly. (I am never handed a model that I've had the experience of working on previously.)

Total cost for Angelo was $60

Fixed - Total cost..$60.

David Mota is a repeat client for my service
in real life he is a computer tech and he works for the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Check out his previous story here

This time David has a problem with his camera which is a Canon Powershot A620. The electronic flash won't work and he's tried a few things already so he brings it to me.

It took me a little longer than usual to take it apart and get to the source of the problem but I was able to get it working again without needing any replacement parts.

Total cost to David was my standard $60 camera repair fee.

Fixed - Total cost..$60.
