Bernard o'Driscoll emailed on a Friday with this message,
"By any chance will you be working this Sunday? I have a Blackberry 8820 that got splashed but only works now some of the time."
We messaged back and forth and he said he would bring it by at 10am Sunday. I was under the impression that he would be in town for a few hours and that would be all the time I had with the phone so I asked him to come by here first. Once he arrived he mentioned he was here on a mission and would likely be returning on Tuesday just two days later. He owns a building at 1747 Pine Street in San Francisco and to keep renter retention high in a down economy he was now incorporating a work out room into the building and had come to Santa Rosa to check out some equipment here for sale.
After he left I dismantled the Blackberry and found some problem areas that I was able to process the water damage areas of the logic board. After I put it back together I realized I didn't even know how to turn it since I'm not a Blackberry user and emailed Bernard for directions on how to turn it on and off. The device worked perfectly. I left it on for the next two days and I was able to flip between screens without issue and the device remained on and useful the whole time.
This is the take apart:
Incidentally, you can use a Motorola RAZR mini-usb recharger to charge a Blackberry.
The total cost to get his Blackberry 8820 back working perfectly again was $60
Fixed - Total cost $60.

Chris Post called me from St. Bonaventure, New York
where he is a student at St. Bonaventure University in early February 2009. He went on to explain that he "somehow" dropped his 16GB 1st Generation iPod Touch in the toilet a few weeks earlier. I sent him instructions by email about how to send it in.
I arrived toward the end of that week on a Saturday. I arrived completely dead. To me it looked completely hopeless because many times I can make the device do something even if the screen won't show it.
I started to methodically go through the iPod and a few hours later put it all back together to test it. It worked.. all of it, the data connectivity, the battery recharge circuits. All of Chris's music and movies (see the "Never Back Down" title shot) were still there.
The total for Chris to get $400 iPod Touch back and working perfectly was $60, easily the best money he's spent in a while.
Fixed - Total cost $60.

Jonathon Delos Santos emailed me from Murietta, California
about his 6th Generation 80GB iPod video. The message read,
"i just saw your website.. looking to get my ipod repair.. i'm from socal, temecula.. the problem with my ipod is that my wife forgot to check my jacket before doing laundry and it did a full wash cycle.. thanks and hope you can get it to work.."
I sent him the instructions to send it in to me and it arrived a few days later on a Saturday. Once I had it apart, I was able see how badly corroded the logic board actually was. This was as bad as I've seen and not have been dropped in salt water. I've got a couple of detail shots here so you can see.
I went through the device meticulously and was able to get to work again perfectly *but * it required replacing the LCD (the backlight wouldn't work) and the battery (was just corroded to death). The LCD was $41, the battery was $19 and labor/return shipping was $40
For $100 Jonathon got his iPod back working perfectly with all of his music and video's on it.
Three days later he sent me this message,
"thanks franks, just receive my ipod yesterday, works great!"
Fixed - Total cost $100.
