Christopher Falcon called me from Fairfax, Virginia about his 3rd Gen Nano iPod. Days later it arrived with a letter that read,
"Thank you for agreeing to evaluate and fix my iPod 3rd generation Nano (if at all possible). Here is what happened. I was on a trip in Puerto Rico last week. Last Saturday we decided to take a hiking trip through the rain forest and made the mistake of bringing my iPod along with me. Once it started to rain I originally wasn't too worried because my iPod was in my supposedly safe and waterproof Northface backpack. Well then it started to rain much harder and eventually it became torrential. When it stopped an hour later I opened my bag and found that water had not just permeated but formed a small pool in the compartment. I mistakenly then tried to power up the iPod at which time it flickered and shut off. I have tried to turn it on once since and it beeps twice but shows no display. Any possible assistance is greatly appreciated as this was a gift from a good friend.
Chris Falcon"
It took a while but I was finally able to get it working again. This one required a new LCD screen which was $22, so with labor/return shipping at $40 he got the iPod back working for $62.
He sent this message on hearing I had it working again with all of files still on it,
"Frank,
Thank you so much for all your help. The ipod was a gift from a girlfriend and had very special sentimental value to me. I'll sing your praises to anyone that issues w/their ipods. Thanks again!
Chris"
Fixed - Total cost $62.

Varisa Zeleny called me from Scottsdale Arizona about her daughter's 1st Generation Touch.
It had been put through the washing machine. I sent her instructions on how to send it and it arrived days later.
This one I was not able to make work perfectly. I got most aspects functioning but there was damage to the NAND flash memory chips and it would not hold the operating system faithfully.
Defeated, I sent it back with a $30 refund.

Lipoi Niualiku called from San Francisco California about his sisters White 30GB 5th Gen video iPod.
He set up the symptoms for me and they were ambiguous. "The battery wouldn't hold a charge".
He sent it in with $40 so I could figure out what was really up with it.
When it got here I was able to figure out the problem was a failed hard drive. It would never finish through the boot phase and consume whatever power the battery had.
I replaced the drive and it worked perfectly again. This was lucky. From his description it could as easily been failed recharge circuits on the logic board.
The drive was $60 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $100.
