Jon Lyon called me from Nampa, Idaho
about his $200 Black 8GB Nano 2nd Gen that he had put through the washer by accident "but got noticed before it went into dryer". I stepped through the instructions for sending it on the phone and then followed up sending them by email afterward.

It arrived about four days later. Once I had it apart I saw the problem area and was able to get the iPod back working again perfectly.

Total cost to get his iPod back *with* all of his songs after a trip through the washing machine... $40

Fixed - Total cost $40.

I got an email from Celeste DeBortoli of Santa Barbara, California
on February 17th of 2009. The message read,

"Frank,

I would like to send my ipod in. It was washed in the washer on Valentines night 2/14/09 What amount $$$ do I send in???"

I replied with a query as to what model iPod we were discussing. I actually won't work on some iPods that have been water immersed because even if I get them to work there will be something else that goes permanently wrong soon enough... think Nano 1st Gen or some of the older 3rd and 4th gen models.

She let me know it was a 4th Gen Nano and I let her know I was able to fix 7 out of 8 of those. It arrived a few days later. After taking it apart I though I had it all working perfectly because plugged into a wall adapter I was getting it to work. When I unplugged it though it would go off and become dead again.

Further examination showed the battery was all right but the battery recharge circuits on the logic board were destroyed. This device would never work portably again. I sent Celeste a message that read,

"I was not able to get the iPod to operate portably. I can't make the battery recharge circuits on the logic board work again.

It will work in a docking station or with a car adapter... anything that provides external power to the USB connections at the bottom of it, but I can't make it work under battery power.

I'll send it back tomorrow with a $20 on the $40 you sent

This is the one in eight I couldn't make work perfectly."

I sent it back the next morning. These are shots of it working plugged in and then off when unplugged.

Rob Lyons lives in Santa Rosa and recently graduated from the San Francisco Police Academy
where he responds to "3 Charlie" calls in the Hunter's Point area of the city. He called to have me look at two iPods he had, one a 5th Gen video that merely "stopped working" and the other a Black 3rd Gen Nano that had gone through the washing machine. He brought them by on a Wednesday afternoon.

Ny later that night I had narrowed the 5th Gen problem down to a failed hard and called to let him know.

By the next morning I had the Nano working in every regard except portability. I could not get the battery recharge circuits to work and charge the battery, which I had already tested as good. It had data connectivity, so the songs could be changed and the screen was fine and bright again. This Nano would work fine in a docking station or with a car stereo adapter.

Since I couldn't make the Nano work perfectly, he got a $20 refund on the $40 he left with it. That $20 refund was applied to the $60 hard drive replacement.

Fixing his 5th Gen video cost $100 and the learning the Nano would never work perfectly again was $20

Fixed - Total cost $100.
