Alasdair Sharpe called from Castro Valley, California.
He has an 80GB 5th Gen video iPod that had only the left side of the earbuds working. I've seen this problem many times before. It is always the result dropping the iPod with the earbuds plugged in and having it land right on the plug. This drives the plug far enough into the jack that it destroys the right side positive connection.
I had the iPod fixed in an hour. The part was $35 and labor was $40.
Alasdair thought he saved time driving from Castro Valley 2 hours away in both directions over waiting in an Apple Store to get the attention of an employee there. )(Remember the Apple Genius's require you make an appointment, which many people never go back and make, though the Apple Genius gets to waits in hope.)
I told him that type of problem would cost $180 for Apple to repair because they would
know the device was dropped, which constitutes abuse and voids the warranty.
Again for him a $75 repair, Happy Days!
Fixed - Total cost $75.

Alex Watson called from Cotati, California
to make sure I was here so she could stop by. She was referred to me by Rebecca Silaris
whose iPod I had repaired 2 days earlier. Alexandra's 5th Gen video iPod was damaged when her boyfriend
waved a strong magnet near it.
What he really done was degauss the hard drive rendering it permanently damaged needed to be replaced.
The replacement 30GB drive was $60 and labor was $40. I had her iPod finished for
her an hour after she left it off.
Fixed - Total cost $100.

Danny Sorrentino a local musician here in Santa Rosa
I've know since the days when we both used to play around town in bands together called explaining he had an iPod with a broken screen.
He came over and it proved to be a 4th Gen black and white. I told I would have it done in an hour.
The LCD was $10 and labor was $40
Fixed - Total cost $50.
