Water Immersion
I dropped it in water can you fix it?
Yet another case was Conor H's nano which I got working perfectly for him. It arrived smelling 'very
clean'. You begin to get a sense of these things. In his case I had
serious doubts... it had too many areas of internal corrosion. I'm going to display
some of the shots of his iPod open. You can click on any of these images and
get a larger shot. The corrosion on these are the result of delaying to get the device opened
and the moisture removed. When you leave the moisture in the iPod it will
re-evaporate then re-condense leaving a film of moisture on the entirety of
the device. The condensing moisture congregates more on the contact points. The points of sensitivity are where the
docking port is soldered down, the surface solder points of the
Application Specific chips the device uses and the LCD ribbon connection.
Whenever you see green in the docking port on the bottom of the iPod, you
know you are in for a knife fight in a dark room with corrosion. It may
not be too obvious in shot one, seeing green in the docking port is the scary part of this work because you know it's much worse inside.
Here are the shots: (click to enlarge)

There are many more success stories of bringing a water dipped iPod back to life, but you get the idea.
But there are two when I wasn't able to bring the wounded back again....
