Melany Stevenson from Nine Mile Falls, Washington
found me on the internet and sent me this message at 10am on New Years Day 2009,
"I currently have a 60gb that is basically a paper weight for me. I don't know much about computers and this little fella just gave up on me. I'm hoping it's just the battery. But, I really don't know. I hook it up to the computer and iTunes won't even recognize it. I realize you are a busy person but, i'd really like to get this thing to you and have it repaired so I can send it to the desert with my husband when he deploys to Iraq. $40 to repair is a lot better than buying a new one! I'm really hooked on this cute little iPod. If you say you can do it (or at least give it a try) I'll go to the post office tomorrow and send it out with a check. Thank you"
I sent her instructions on how to send it in and it arrived several days later. I took it apart and checked through each of the parts in it. Everything worked except the logic board which means something external to normal use fried it. It had no data connectivity or USB power connectivity, but did have firewire power connectivity. Knowing that I knew it was wall or car adaptive device that used the single set of USB power pins to charge it.
I sent her a message the read,
"I took it apart and tested each part separately. Everything works except the
logic board. Typically logic board failure is the result using a bad
(non-Apple... perhaps Griffen of Coby) wall adapter, or a bad docking station or
a bad car adapter.
Can you think of the instance when this was plugged into any of them?"
and she came back with...
"yes, I have a griffen plug for the cars cigarette lighter I do believe the last full charge/use as while we were traveling & we listened to the iPod music over the radio with a griffen iTrip. I guess I won't be using that anymore. Can you fix the logic board? If so does it cost extra? I really don't know anything about computers as you can tell. Let me know.
Thanks for letting me know so quickly."
The Griffen car adapter had failed and thrown full voltage (+12) at full current (60amps) into the iPod logic board which was looking for 5 volts at 500 milliampheres of current and baked the logic board.
The replacement part was $90 and labor/return shipping as $40
The shot below shows her hard drive with 15GB "missing". I ran a data extraction and pulled all of her songs off of her drive. I sent the iPod back repaired with instructions on how to add all of her songs to her iTunes Library and as many friends as she cares to permanently.
Data extraction and file parking for the owners use is always part of my $40 labor service.
Fixed - Total cost $130.

Samantha Parker called me from Alger, Michigan
about her daughter's iPod. I get calls like this one all the time... she had put her daughter's iPod through the wash and almost run it out before realizing the device was missing. That occurred on December 11th and was receiving this phone call 3 weeks later.
I told her what success rate was with Nano 3rd Gen iPods and then sent by email instructions to her on to send it in. It arrived on January 7th 2009 and I worked at it over the next two days. I was able to get her iPod working perfectly without the need to replace any of its parts.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Mindy Renfro called me from Idaho Falls, Idaho
in the first week of January. She also had put her Nano 3rd Generation iPod through the wash. I think at first she thought she got away with it. The iPod seemed to work after, but the backlight on the LCD wouldn't come on and that's why she called me.
Her iPod arrived on January 9th and I opened it up not long after it got here. I always move water cases to the head of my repair line because I consider them time critical. The interior of her iPod was FILLED with lint on the scroll wheel (front side) of the logic board and covered with lead oxide corrosion on the back side of the logic board.
Two hours later I had it cleaned up and working again. I did have to replace the LCD.
I noticed she had Aldo Nova's Fantasy from 1980 on her iPod. I had a garage band while growing up. One of the guys became Boston's guitar player, another was the singer for Mr. Big and out keyboard/guitar (utility) player was Paul Horowitz who toured in Aldo's band and recorded the second album. Paul lives in Nashville now and is a writer/producer. Aldo is back living in Montreal and is a writer/producer there and spent time with a Celine Dion project recently.
The LCD was $33 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $73.
