Scott Berger emailed me from San Francisco (94122) about a his 6th Gen 160Gb video iPod.
The message read,
"Hello,
I recently purchased a used Ipod Classic and now I think I should have just bought it new as the case has marks and it broke the thrid time I tried to update it from itunes (had it less than a week). I think I have made a couple of mistakes with it. First, I managed after several tries to put it into disk mode. But instead of leaving it work itself out, I turned off my computer. I did this because it disappeared as an icon, and my computer itself was saying that it could not access "computer" much less F drive. Next I tried to turn the ipod on, the red x arrived (as it had before) and it would not go into disk mode or any mode. It just churns/clicks as it shows the regular apple and then the red x with the web address of apple support. I hear it's under warranty but can't even read the serial #, plus I have heard apple will say I dropped it because of all the markings on the case including the serial # being kinda scratched (haven't held a magnifying glass to it yet).
As you know, I want to know if you think you can fix it or if you have experience with this type of "break." If you have questions, let me know and I'll try to answer them as best I can. I have been on the web concerning fixes and I came across your site. I like your approach. Thanks in advance.

He sent it up with $40 and I tore it down to determine the root of the problem, which proved to be a failed hard drive.
I sent him this message,
"Scott
I know what the problem is now.... It is the hard drive and it needs to be replaced.
There are five options at this point.
1) replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a 30GB drive (more than enough space really). The drive is $50 and the labor/return shipping is $40 (which you have already paid)
2) replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a 80GB drive . The drive is $75 and the labor/return shipping is $40 (which you have already paid)
3) replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a 120GB drive. The drive is $95 and the labor/return shipping is $40 (which you have already paid)
4) replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a 160GB drive. The drive is $105 and the labor/return shipping is $40 (which you have already paid)
5) not repair it and send it back with a $20 refund
Let me know how to proceed
Frank"
and he came with a choice of option one.
Fixed - Total cost $90.
