Fabian Madrigal called from Fairfield, California
explaining that his Nano 1st Generation needed a new battery and... maybe more. He didn't explain how exactly how the device had been rolled over by a car and severely folded.

It arrived a few days later. The first mission was to determine if (once I took the crushed backplate off) I could get it working again. If I wasn't able to get the device to work then replacing the battery was unnecessary.

The backplate came and the logic board was pretty warped, but I was able to get it working again *and* I was able to preserve the songs he had on it.

The next step was desoldering and soldering in a new battery for him.

I also replaced at no charge the really crushed backplate.

The battery was $15 and labor/return shipping was $40 so the total was $55

Fixed - Total cost..$55.

Steven Stuart called me one day from Napa, California
(over the hill from me) to discuss the problem he was having with his 5th Generation Video iPod.

My take on his problem was the hard drive had failed. He sent it in with a check for $100 to take care of it.

I replaced the drive and sent it back a day later. It was $60 for the drive and $40 labor/return shipping.

Fixed - Total cost..$100.

Ralph Vargas called from San Clemente, California

to discuss his 4th Generation iPod and its failing 40GB hard drive.

Drives of that are vintage that work appreciably are very difficult to find. The hard drive industry has moved away from the 44 pin IDE buss/interface and moved onto a Zero Insertion Force connection that has a higher speed ATA buss. The newer drives used by the 5th and 6th Generation video iPods are still very frail but faster at data seeking and delivery through a faster data buss.

In Ralph's case I had a solidly working 20GB drive that worked in his 4th Gen model. I counseled him on how to use it and treat it and then offered to sell it him at $25 if he sent his iPod in for me to install it. We then discussed his battery and decided that it was time to replace it. I volunteered to replace his backplate at no charge.

The iPod arrived a few days later and I installed the drive and battery.

Total cost for him to get his iPod back and working $80

Fixed - Total cost..$80.
