Andy Parsons emailed me from Powder Springs, Georgia
saying,
"Frank,
I have a 60 gig video IPod. Most of the time it does not have a menu, just the logo page shows. There are times however that I can get a menu and play songs and video. I need to send it on to you for an attempt at repair unless my description is one of possible total death. Let me know and I'll get it in the mail today. I would PP you the funds once you receive it.
Thanks"
It arrived a few days later. The drive worked in other systems so I didn't consider that was the problem. Other drives wouldn't go through the boot phase so I knew it was one of two things battery delivering enough current to take it through the boot phase or the logic board.
I centered on the logic board and though it really just needed to be replaced and sent Andy an email saying so. He hadn't given any idea that it was a water case and the inner logic board showed nothing but I decided to take apart and down a much deeper level anyway. I discovered lead oxide corrosion indicating water on the front of the logic board. I was able to process the corrosion and still recommended a new battery to Andy.
I may not have mentioned Andy works at Turner Broadcasting's CNN division as a senior project manager. He was thrilled and volunteered to send me an autographed photo of Robin Mead... I'm sure it will be a head shot but I'm hoping...... for their famous bikini shot ;)
The battery was $26 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $66.

Renee Lawrence called me from San Marcos, (near San Diego) California.
She works for the Storage Area Network company EMC. She provides support to their products and travels to Asia frequently as a product of her work. She has a 5th Generation video iPod with an 80GB drive and had it at 65GB filled when her Windows based system took a dive and became "un-available". You know what I mean by "un-available" don't you. It had one of those catastrophic catastrophes that every Windows seems to endure at 20 to 28 month intervals. It took everything digital of value with it. Photos, work and music.
All of her files were on the iPod which also had a been exposed to water a couple of weeks earlier. Renee made her efforts to deal with the water but wasn't able to make a difference and bring it back to life so she contacted me.
I was able to get all of the parts working again except the hard drive... wouldn't you know
it. It required a drive replacement I also suggested a new battery since she was a fairly
user.
She wanted a replacement in the 80GB size, so the drive was $100 and the battery was $26
Fixed - Total cost $166.

Patricia Busley called me from Alamo, California
in the east bay area. She bought a replacement battery for her 3rd Generation iPod form a
mail order place and believed she would be able to effect the replacement herself. A lot of
people get frightened off because Apple makes breaking into iPods look complex.
She sent her iPod in along with my $40 fee to get to replace her battery with the one she bought mail order. The iPod was fixed and on its way to her the next day after it arrived.
Fixed - Total cost $40.
