Paul Steinberg sent me and email from Tarrytown, New York.
It was enlightening and read,
"Frank-
I'm sending you an iPod, the below note will be enclosed:
Here's my iPod Photo 30GB for repair.
I'm having the clickwheel problem you describe where it flickers
between a few menu items (when it moves at all).
Brief history of the unit, it woke up with the unhappy face about 8 months ago.
I sent it to a repair place called ikaput.com which is now out of business.
The diagnosis was a bad logic board which I had them do along with a
faceplate replacement due to severe scratching over the display.
They were awful, took almost 3 weeks to return the unit to me and it was DOA.
I sent it back and they took another couple of weeks to return it.
When I got it back the second time it worked but the clickwheel seemed loose.
Considering it seemed to work OK and how long it took to get it back
the first two times I didn't return it for repair a third time.
So that's how we got here.
Send me an email and I'll PayPal $40 right over
Thanks,
Paul"
It arrived a few days later. The scroll wheel was floating in the case and I replaced it to make it work correctly.
The scroll wheel was $20 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $60.

Vincent Latronica sent in his 5th Gen video iPod from Cortlandt Manor, New York in Westchester County
after he had a problem with the 80GB hard drive in it. His most serious problem turned on
also having his Windows system suffer a "catastrophic failure" or blue screen of death syndrome. He lost his original iTunes Library and had hoped I could recover a copy of it from his drive.
I haver the tools to do this provided the hard drive still operates, the bad side of this was also then waiting until his iPod basically had the same problem his Windows machine suffered to do anything about it. I wasn't able to run an effective data recovery.... and his hard drive had to be replaced.
The drive was $100 and the labor/return shipping was $40.
Fixed - Total cost $140.

Glenn Shor called me from Berkeley, California.
He was having a problem with his 5th Gen 30GB video iPod and the battery wasn't holding
a charge. He sent it in with a check for $40 and a note saying he would use PalPal to cover any other needed expenses.
I opened the iPod to replace the battery and discovered the interior had a unhealthy
amount of lead-oxide corrosion. It had been exposed to a serious amount of water at
some point earlier and had really damaged it's system.
I put the device through my 'patented' frank lead-oxide remediation and was able to all the aspects of the iPod to work again including the battery.
Glenn was on vacation when he sent his iPod in, and wouldn't be back for 12 days. He will be surprised to find his iPod back and working when he gets back, no additional money or parts needed.
Total cost for him was $40 labor/return shipping.
Fixed - Total cost $40.
