Laura Noguchi called from San Carlos, California
Before
After
about her 4th Generation Black and White iPod. The screen had taken a hit and was smashed in the lower right corner, did I fix this type of thing. I told her yes, provided the hard drive was still working in her system I would do it. ipods of the 4th Gen vintage were built in 2004 and 2005. They are by this time (2008) experiencing hard drive end of life. I do not promote repairing them unless I know up front that it has a working hard drive still.
Since her drive worked pre-LCD smash I told her to send it in. The LCD would be $10 and
labor/return shipping would be $40. It arrived on October 28th 2008 and was sent back repaired later that same afternoon. She will get her iPod back working perfectly even before her $50 check is cashed ;)
Fixed - Total cost $50.

Lynn Faus called me one day from San Francisco, California.
She had two iPods that she wanted to get repaired and called to make sure I was here and ready to help. One of them was a Nano 1st Generation which I've described here http://www.isickbay.com/1st_gen_nano_ipod_problem.shtml as something typically not worth repairing. The only repair I'll do on those is replace the LCD screen.... which happens to be what she needed.
The other iPod was a Nano 2nd Generation and she described it as having battery problems.
They arrived a couple of days later and the 1st Gen screen was straight forward. I was not able to
determine an actual problem with the battery or it's life in the 2nd Gen so I was left thinking she
had a bad USB/docking cable.
I charged her $21 for the LCd and $40 labor on the 1st Gen and I charged her just $20 to examine the
2nd Gen *but* I also gave her a new USB/data docking cable hoping that would make a difference for her.
Fixed - Total cost $81.

Rich Mc Cune called me from here in Santa Rosa.
He lives over by the Ice Arena and worked for Agilent as a machinist. His daughter's 8GB iPod Touch had gone through the washing machine a few weeks earlier... well actually 2 months earlier and he only found out about in the past few days.
I considered it long odds that I would get to work again and really wanted to pass on the job because I will spend hours trying to make a recovery for the $40 I charge and this job had a low probability for success.
We agreed to a modified fee. He would drop the Touch off and give me a non-refundable $40 to make my best efforts. If I was successful then I would get $20 more.
We chatted once he got here found we had become acquainted at the funeral service for my best friend's (Paul Horowitz now the musician called Paul Taylor) mother Virginia. As we talked we found quite a number of friends in common.
His Touch had no data connectivity and the screen wouldn't work or update. After working on his iPod I was able to get the iPod to work in every way except one. It had it's memory, all of the touch screen aspects worked, the menus presented and the songs played through earbuds... even the battery re-charge circuits worked and the battery held a charge. The thing that had been damaged was the port/jack the screen plugged into the specifically the Backlight connection. I was not able to get the back light work because of the damage to the logic board.
He got a near working iPod Touch for $40. You can make out the touch screen icons in
this shot by me tipping it back into the sunlight.
Fixed - Total cost $40.
