Michael Bowman called me from Oakland, California.
His 5th Generation video iPod had a standard problem, he was able to hear from the left side earbud only. He actually remembered dropping it and having the right side stop working. We also discussed the battery life he was getting agreed the battery was due for replacement. His iPod arrived a few days later and I had it ready for him the next day.
The battery was $23, the head phone jack was $28 and labor was $40
Fixed - Total cost $91.

Erin Way emailed one day from Los Angeles, California
with a message reading,
"I dropped my ipod in a bucket of water about 5 days ago. I put it in a bowl of rice (like I did with my cell phone) but in this case it did NOT work :( I'm sure that comes as no surprise to you. Anyway, can I send it to you on Monday?
A very sad girl in LA"
In a later message I determined the iPod was a 6th Generation video iPod so it was worth an attempt at fixing and I told her to send it up. It arrived but I wasn't able to make a difference and sent here this message,
"Okay, it's here and I've gone to work on it.
This is about the worst result I've experienced recently.
1) The LCD doesn't work well... in another 6th Gen iPod it produces a white screen with no data painting to it.
2) The logic board won't drive a new LCD, and this after I really have the logic board all up, so the logic board doesn't work.
3) and last the hard drive doesn't work at all in any system
There is no practical way to consider repairing this one, it can be replaced for less.

Frank"
I sent it back with a $20 refund, it cost here 420 to learn it now chance of working.

Sue Braughman called me from here in Santa Rosa, California.
She had a computer *and* a laptop that need help. Let's deal with the computer now though. She describes it's problem and the more I listened the more I thought it was a failed power supply. I explained I charge $80 plus any needed parts to analyze and fix a computer. If the repair is impractical because there is too much wrong (think baked motherboard) then I will wave her off and return 1/2 the money.
She brought it by and I tore it down and checked things. It was the +12 stage of the computer's power supply that had failed. Without the +12 the hard drive disk will kick into rotation. I had a spare of that part which I sold her for $15.
Works perfectly now, the power supply was $15 and labor was $80. Here is a shot of her iTunes screen.
Fixed - Total cost $95.
