Tom Olivieri who works for British Petroleum in La Palma California

reached me by phone after finding my web site. He had performed an internet search to find someone that might help with an iPod "dropped in water".
The iPod is his daughter Kristin's and as I recall the device went through the washing machine. Initially after getting it out of the washing "it worked"
as many iPods do when they first come out of the water hazard.
Not too long after they will either stop working altogether because they get a build up of lead oxide corrosion which destroys the logic board or components
(LCD/Hard Drive) *or* they stop working because the "smart circuit" that is part of the battery gets affected by corrosion.
When the battery circuit gets affected the result is a battery that will not hold a charge and has to be replaced. In most water immersion cases the battery
should be replaced without question anyway.
Kristin had a perfect battery failure in her Nano 2nd Gen but it wasn't obvious for another two weeks while she held out hope.
Finally Tom got a hold of me again and said he was sending it to get the battery replaced.
The battery in the Nano 2nd Gen is $15 and the labor in this case is more than typical at $55 because it is a long tedious solder job , so the total was $70.
Works perfectly now, all her music is intact.
Fixed - Total cost..$70.

Jim Sherrin works with Tom Olivieri at BP in La Palma, California

and has an iPod Mini. His battery needed replacing and he sent it up from La Palma in Southern California.
The battery was $10 and the labor was $40.
It works like new.
Fixed - Total cost $50.

Betty Bynum from Cedarcrest, New Mexico

called because she saw I was a water immersion expert related to iPods.
She sent in her iPod with a few requests. She wanted me to hopefully
take care of the water damage to it. She also wanted me to extract the
song and photos from it and then re-format her video iPod from a Windows
FAT32 format to the MAC HFS format and then put all her songs and photos
on it.
She thought the problem was oxide corrosion realted to
headphone/hold-lock switch because she got no audio from her earbuds but
did through the docking port connection.
In fact the problem was corrosion on the logic which had knocked out the
headphone output amplifiers.
The logic board is $100 and a needed replacement battery was $23 and
then the labor/return shipping at $40 bought the potential total to
$163. We both thought that might be more than she had in mind and agreed
to have do the data extraction, format the drive, move the files over to
the drive and send the iPod using it as a transport vehicle to recover
all the songs and photos she had on it but hadn't backed up before her
computer failed.
Total cost for here data extraction, parking the files and sending the
iPod back with exact instructions to add them permenently to her iTunes
Library... $40
Fixed - Total cost..$40.
