Mark Falls gave me a call me from locally here in Santa Rosa, California
The battery in his Mini wasn't holding a charge and he needed it replaced.

He bought it by at 10:30am January 15th 2008 and was able to pick it up finished at 11:30am the same day.

Here he is when picking it up.

Fixed - Total cost..$40.

Alex Cortagena of Santa Rosa, California
called to get a sense of what it would cost to get his 4th Gen iPod going again.

In the conversation, I got the impression he had a Black and White 4th Gen. His description was "the device just stopped working completely".

This is very rare, usually there is something on the screen that gives you a clue to the error.

When I saw it, I realized it was a Photo iPod with a color screen. I plugged it into a firewire wall adapter which will usually jump start any iPod that has a battery problem. The iPod's screen did not come to life even though I heard hte hard drive wind up to speed and the read/write armature perform the bootloader seek.

I've had this kind of happen before... in that case the LCD failed without being cracked. So I replaced the LCD and started it again, this time Presto! I could see all the boot up steps passing on the screen.

I told Alex he needed a new LCD and he said while I'm at it let's replace the battery.

I gave him a deal on the LCD, just $23 because that would keep the repair in line with the value of the device afterward, and I want to encourage people to repair rather than replace their iPods.

So the LCD was $23 the battery was $16 and the labor was $40. Here's Alex when he came to pick it up.

Fixed - Total cost $79.

Tim Leonard sent his 5th Gen Video iPod from Saint Helena, California about 40 miles from here. The right side head phone wasn't working, which occurs when the device is dropped with the earbuds plugged in and it lands on the plug still in the jack.

His was fixed the day it arrived (January 13th, 2008) and sent back the same day. Tim should have gotten it the next day Tuesday January 14th.

It was $35 for the headphone wire harness and $40 labor for a total of $75.

Fixed - Total cost..$75.
