Jan Staszlewski emailed me from Eugene, Oregon.
She has a 1st generation Nano and it has the problem many have developed. The iPod is permanently "locked". What has happened is the hold/lock switch has stopped working and on that model not working becomes permanently locked scroll wheel.
The truth is this is a bad design by Apple. They use a double pole double throw switch soldered to the logic board that is so cheap the switch alone is prone to fail. But the worse side of it is the logic board itself with the heat from the LCD tends to warp and that lifts actually breaks one of the two needed solder contacts.
When the switch desolders in one of two solder pads the device is "locked", Apple designed it as fail equals lock instead of 'open switch equals unlocked'.
She sends it in with a $40 check and I've re-soldered the part down again.
Notice we down several menu's on her iPod and we only would get there from a working scroll wheel *and* there is no lock symbol at the top of the LCD.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Matt Peterson of Ann Arbor, Michigan
described his daughters problem in email.
"Hi,
I left my ipod in the washing machine a week ago and just saw your site. Its a 3rd generation ipod nano, do you think it has any chance of being fixed? If so I could send it in to you asap, it sounds like the quicker the better. I was only 2 weeks old before this happened and I would love to get it working again. It didn't go through the dryer and the case looks in great condition, it just doesn't power on. If you could get back to me when you have a chance that would be great,
thanks"
He sent it in a day later and I received it within the week. I was able to get it working again but it needed a new LCD.
The cost was $33 for the LCD and $40 labor/return shipping.
Fixed - Total cost $73.

Sam Morello's daughter Samantha had her 3rd Generation Nano go through the washing machine.
He emailed me from Johnson, Pennsylvania to ask me about sending it in. I replied within a minute or so and sent him instructions on how to send it in to me.
It got here a few days later. I always caution people that have 3rd Gen Nano's or 6th Gen Classic Video iPods that Apple has changed the way the back plate goes on now to make it CONSIDERABLY harder to open the device without somehow damaging the back plate. A bit over 95% of the time everything goes perfectly. In a very few cases there is a bit of cosmetic damage to the backplate.
Samantha's backplate came off fine. The iPod needed a new LCD but I was able to get it working perfectly. Her Christmas present 2007 went back a day later.
Total cost to Sam was $33 for the LCD and $40 for the labor/return shipping.
