Rob Strahlendorf lives in Rohnert Park
and works in Windsor at Clark Pest Control. He called to determine what might be the problem with his 4th Gen 40GB iPod. We went through the analysis together and it settled on a battery problem and something else. It could be the drive which would be really bad or it could be the headphone module which I would give to him as a part because I have more than I will ever need.
He stopped by and dropped it off with $40 to start the repair. It turned out to be the battery and the headphone jack module.
The module was free, the battery was $15 and labor was $40. Total cost $50 to get it back working perfectly and this was a device he was basically prepared to jettison early in the morning.
Fixed - Total cost $50.

Jorge Hernandez called me from here in Santa Rosa
I missed the call. I was at the Post Office sending iPods back to people at the time but responded to the email he sent at the same time.
After three years the battery in his iPod wasn't holding even a 30 minute charge. He brought it by and I replaced the battery and checked to make sure it had good USB data connectivity and good USB power connectivity (to make sure the battery could be recharge through the re-charge circuits on the logic board).
The iPod had good USB connections and the battery made the difference. The battery was $19 and labor was $40
He has a perfect working iPod now.
Fixed - Total cost $59.

Sean Oneil called me from Fremont, California
about his 5th Gen video iPod. He had hearing from the left side earbud only. We all know this to be the result of dropping the iPod with the earbuds plugged in and having it hit on the earbud plug driving it far enough into the iPod that it destroys the right side positive connection.
He sent it to get fixed and while it was here to also get the battery replaced.
The battery was $19, the earbud jack was $28 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $87.
