Brett Ackerman is a previous customer and lives on Lopez Island in Washington.
He sent his 6th Gen video iPod in (without previous on the phone consultation) to have the scroll wheel replaced. He actually got the diagnosis right and that's what it needed to have done, which is rare. Many people see a symptom and leap to the wrong conclusion.
I've commented on my site that Apple eliminated the grounding strap on the 6th gen scroll wheel which existed on basically the same part in the 5th Gen version. As a consequence scroll wheel failure in the 6th Gen model is about 18 times higher than it was in the 5th Gen video iPod model.
Here is a shot of his fixed iPod, to get to this "About" screen requires a working scroll wheel.
The part was $38 and labor/return shipping was $40. This repair arrived on Wednesday February 25th 2009 and was sent back fixed the next day... Feb 26th 2009.
Fixed - Total cost $78.

I got a call from Andy Price who lives in Petaluma.
He's a previous iPod client so when he had a problem with his son Alan's iPod it took only a second to think of me. His son's 6th Gen 80GB video iPod was "mistaken" by another student at his school and the other student sync'd it to his own iTunes Library. That changed the device name to "Jaquin's iPod" and parked a whole set of other music on it. Drew wasn't able to make the changes back and was mystified. After speaking with him for a few minutes, he got his wife to bring to me the iPod, the data cable, and their son Alan's Sony Viao laptop.
The problem seemed to turn on 'data connectivity". Do we have a faulty iPod docking station that killed the logic board? Do we have a faulty data cable. Not all USB docking cables sold for iPods have data connections. There are some sold at Radio Shack with wall adapters, that have USB power connections only. If they were using one of those, it would be the cause.
When it got here I connected the iPod to my systems and was able to get a data connection, so it wasn't the iPod. Then I plugged their docking cable into my system and tried their iPod and that had a good data connection, so I could rule out the cable.
Next I started the laptop and connected their cable and iPod to it.... no data connectivity. Not on either USB port. So I knew it as the laptop. The question then became...
1) is a permanent USB hardware failure on the logic board?
2) is it a missing or corrupt USB hub driver?
3) is it a missing or corrupt USB iPod device driver?
It turned out to be #3. I got a good copy of the device driver and ran the install. The iPod was recognized and sync'd immediately.
Total cost to get their iPod and laptop back working correctly was $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Sam Portnoff called me from Ithaca, New York on Saturday
(yes I work on Saturdays~!) February 21st 2009 to discuss his 5th Gen video iPod. He had hearing from the left side only which means he had dropped it with the earbuds in it one day. He actually remembered the event. I emailed him instructions on how to send it in and it arrived a few days later.
I had the repair on it finished the afternoon it arrived and it was on the way back to the next day.
The total round trip for his iPod was 5 days. The part was $28 and labor/return shipping was $40
Look at the title on the screen. See how Barenaked Ladies is misspelled? Which Peer to Peer file
sharing program do you think he's using???
Fixed - Total cost $68.
