I got a call from Brittany who is Fabian Martinez's girlfriend.
They live in Forestville which is just west of here and were actually calling from the Apple Store in the Santa Rosa Plaza about a mile from here. They had brought his 5th Generation video iPod to the Apple Store to get the hearing restored to both ears. He could only hear from the left side.

The Apple Geniuses explained this was a device no longer under warranty and therefore wouldn't.... actually couldn't be repaired through them. They would allow Fabian a 10% discount if he traded in that iPod on another. That meant $225 for another similar iPod *and* the new one wouldn't have any of the music and videos he had collected on it. Remember it will come with a new scrubbed drive allowing Apple a chance to sell replacement music through their iTunes website.

Britt also looked up on the internet to see if there may have been an Apple alternative in the area. Within 300 miles, I am that alternative yet they were lucky enough to live 6 miles away.

They brought it over and within an hour I had it repaired and working perfectly again. The headphone jack/hold-lock switch wire harness was $28 and labor was $40

It was just $68 to Fabian's iPod back working perfectly again with all of his music still on it.

Fixed - Total cost $68.

Elisa Hewson lives here in Santa Rosa and is a previous customer.
She had a unique problem. She had her USB flash drive pushed into the the front of her computer while her son went to remove the mouse from it. He did this by tipping the computer forward which basically bent and the snapped away the USB jack contacts from the printed circuit board the memory chip was wave flow soldered to.

She called because she has come to think of me as the general "technology fix it guy" that she knows and wondered if I could make it work again. The reason she was so keen on getting it to work again is she this as the only repository for all of the homework from her college courses the previous semester and all of that work she needed for the next semester. There was no practical way she would be able to re-create the work.

She brought it over and left it off with $60 which is non-iPod repair fee. I analyzed the problem and realized there were cold solder cracks at the USB plug. The stress had broken two of the wire whiskers away from the circuit board and they needed to be hot soldered down before I could make a data recovery attempt. Luckily I have a Weller WM120 soldering pencil which has a fine enough tip to do the job.

After re-soldering things down I tried to run the data recovery and was ultimately successful.

She got a 100's of hours of work back and I spent time teaching her about back up techniques for just $60

A detail of her recovered homework:

Fixed - Total cost $60.

Jesus Solis sent in his two iPods from Lodi, California.
One was a 4th Generation Mini that he knew needed and new battery and also "I can only hear audio from one earphone". The Blue 2nd Gen Nano he believed, "needs a new battery". It turns out he was only right about the Mini needing a battery. There was no hearing out of both ears on the Mini and while he thought is was the hearing module, I actually torn the device down further and found that both audio channels *on the logic board* were destroyed. I'll never know what the cause of that was. The Nano I couldn't make work in any way. My belief is the Nano was used on a docking station that let full wall current into it and destroyed that logic board. Naturally, it could have been that single device that killed off both iPods. I gifted him the logic board for free, charged him $10 for the battery and labor was $40. So the Mini I made made work with a new battery for him for just $50. Remember, the thing I am most interested in is keeping iPods working so they don't have to be replaced. I make the repair affordable that you really are encouraged to get it repaired.

Fixed - Total cost $50.
