Christopher Williams called me from Sacramento, California
about the 3 iPods he was needed help with. One was a 5th Gen video iPod that had a smashed LCD. Another was a Red Nano 2nd Gen that had been put through the washer and the third was another early 60GB 5th Gen that "should" work but didn't.

I had him send them over from the valley.

The 5th Gen with the broken screen came together pretty quickly. He had badly dented the steel back plate but somehow it didn't damage the headphone jack. I replaced the backplate at no charge because it would really make the iPod look 'new' again. The LCD was $33 and labor was $40.

The Red Nano I was not able to get working at all. On the phone he thought all it needed was a new LCD. In fact, I tested the LCD in another 2nd Gen and it worked but had water splotches from water still trapped between the layers. It looked like it should work but just couldn't.

The 5th Gen without the broken screen had WHOLE different problem. When I opened it up... well actually it arrive open already. It had been immersed in Diet Coke or some type of not too sweet soft drink. There was real corrosion and brown drops trapped in the LCD screen. There was no way to fix one, nothing worked.

I was able to one of the three going. The other 2 were sent back with a $20 refund.

Fixed - Total cost $73.

Jose Gross called me from Houston, Texas
about his 60GB 4th Generation Photo iPod. He was having difficulties making the device work and it was perceived as a hard drive problem. It arrived a few days later and it was a drive problem that I was able to correct.

The total cost to get it working again was $40

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Lorna Atwater emailed me from Berea, Kentucky
on February 3rd 2009 about $350 6th Generation 160GB video iPod. It was another water case, but this one a little different.

"Help! I took my iPod out of my overnight bag this morning and it wouldn't turn on. I noticed that it seemed sticky on the outside. I am afraid that some Quik strawberry milk has spilled on it/in it? I read your stories about being able to clean and dry the parts, and it sounds like you are very meticulous. Am I wrong to hope that there might be new life after this terrible event? Or shall I begin to cry over the spilled milk?

I assure you this is for real; I am not making this up. I bought the milk as a joke/surprise for a family member. After a couple of swigs the top was replaced and it was left in a fabric bag which also held the ipod and assorted other stuff. I didn't think any damage had occurred when I took the milk out of the bag, but that was last night, and I didn't check the ipod until this morning.

What do you say? When I put it on the charger it shows the apple logo momentarily, repeatedly, but I don't think it is actually charging. I am so hoping that my carelessness won't cost me the ipod !

Please let me know what you think. Is it landfill?

Thanks for your time, Lorna Atwater Berea, Kentucky"

It arrived and there was sweet smelling pink sticky stuff in all the hard to reach places. I was able to clean things out and get the device working again. It needed a new battery and LCD because of corrosion on the ribbon connections but all the songs and movies remained intact. The LCD was $41, the battery was $23 and labor/return shipping was $40.

Lorna's comment was, "I am so thrilled to hear about the iPod. I have been suffering withdrawal. Just sent the PayPal payment, and thank so much for your excellent care. I will 'talk you up' to anybody who needs this kind of help. Thanks so much!"

Fixed - Total cost $104.
