Daniel Nicholas lives here in the county and emailed one morning about his iPod. The message read,
"Hi,
I have a 30Gig Ipod, I want to say 3rd generation. It was the model with color but not video. I think the picture Ipod is how it was marketed. It worked fine until I plugged it into a universal charger that was set to 7.5 volts. Now I can charge it on my car charger, then I turn it on and it boots up and heats up, then the battery is drained. I am thinking short in the charging ckt. Any idea on how much to fix?
Thanks
Daniel
I work in Healdsburg and live in SR."
I responded back,
"It sounds like you've baked the logic board and the battery but I really won't know until I have it here and can it apart to figure out what still works.
Is the music on it's hard drive still safely in an iTunes Library?
The best approach is to bring it to me with $40 and have go through the steps. If it's worth fixing I'll say so and let you know is needed and how much. If it's too far gone I'll give it back with a refund of $20 of the $40 you left.
Frank"
He brought it by on Saturday and he actually had a @0GB 4th Gen but the drive in it was working perfectly so repairing it was the way to go. His logic board was permanently damaged by his car adapter. I tell people continually the battery in the iPod will last 10 hours and to use a Kensington MicroFM transmitter instead of a cigarette lighter based car adapter.
The logic board was $35 and labor was $40 but he got his iPod back to full utility again.
Fixed - Total cost $75.

Shay Chazon lives in Alameda, California (about 50 miles south of here) and found me using the internet.
He called to go over his problem with his 5th Gen video iPod which was no hearing from the right side. We discussed the cause (dropping it) and he agreed to bring it up for me to fix.
The next morning he dropped it off and picked it up repaired an hour later. The part was $28 and labor was $40
Fixed - Total cost $68.
