Kelley Shields emailed me from San Francisco, California. The message read,
"Hi,

Have you ever tried to repair an iPod Touch that had coffee spilled on it?

A few days ago, my 32GB iPod Touch stopped working (would not turn on at all). I removed the case and found a small amount of coffee between my case and the device (I was not aware of anything spilling on it). I tried putting it in rice to dry it out for four days, but when I removed it from the rice today, it still would not turn on.

I have not tried opening the iPod to check inside."

I sent her back information o how to send it in and it arrived a few days later. I need to point out, like many people who are guilty about a matter, she grossly understated what she had done and what it was dropped into. i describe coffee as black colored, water based with maybe a tablespoon of milk to a cup. What she should have said was coffee drink. It had a chocolate smell and all through the inside was a fudge-like substance so the liquid was more of a Mocha Latte. Later she admitted it was a Latte that had chocolate shavings sprinkled on it.

Now lets get to "spilled on it". The damage to the device occupied the lower third. The only way it could have spilled on it and have that happen is if she had inverted it and poured it into the bottom of the iPod. It wasn't spilled on it, it had been dropped into it and left there long enough unnoticed that it migrated to height of the liquid.

These are shots of what the interior looked like. Again the fudge aspect is the adhesion quality of the sugar in the Latte. By artificially sweetening these "coffee drinks", places like Starbucks turn it into a coffee flavored 'milkshake'. A Venti Caffe Latte there made with whole milk has 290 calories, if you have them use Soy milk it can drop to as low as 220 calories. Everyone who makes these coffee drinks makes the same way using the same ingredients. (Kaffe Mochas with a whipped cream topping are 450 calories).

You have to consume 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat. If on average you have a Latte 5 times a week, it singularly could responsible for you gaining 17 pounds in a year.

Put another way, if you have a Latte 5 times a week on average and stop without substituting a muffin or sandwich as a comfort based alternative, you could loose the "Freshman Twenty" you put on when you started drinking these. I don't think it's a coincidence that "muffin tops" and Lattes became prominent at the same time.

Plus you could save about $760~$820 a year.

Now let's spend a moment on black coffee. It has 5 calories in a 16 ounce cup. Add a tablespoon of milk and you add 9 calories to it. Do you know that when you Espresso roast coffee beans you bake off 30 and 40% of the caffeine? If you are someone like me that has coffee because it's a caffeine delivery agent, clears your mind *and* you enjoy the flavor, regular coffee is the only real choice.

Back on the iPod... to try to get it to work again required I re-immerse the iPod in clear water to dissolve the fudge. This isn't the first time I've done this. My brother also spilled a "Nestle International Coffee" on his laptop and I had to use this technique to get his laptop back up running again.

After standing in clear water and getting everything to dissolve off of it, I was able to start through my more usual process. In Kelly's case I could not make it work again.... at all and refunded her $30 of the $60 she sent in with it.

Here is a detail shot of the damage. If you click on it you will see a bigger image.

Kurt Knoll lives here in Santa Rosa and is a UPS driver that delivers in the Montgomery village area.
He called on Saturday to have me help analyze what was going on with his 5th Gen video iPod. It seemed to me he had at best a frail and weak drive. I gave him instruction on how to run a restore when he finished the steps he called me back.

The restore hadn't made a difference in the flakey behavior and we agreed it was time to bring it in to the 'ipod hospital'. A hour after he dropped it off, I had the drive replaced and it was ready for him. The replacement drive was $60 and labor was $40.

Fixed - Total cost $100.
