I got an email from David Martinez of Santa Anna, California that read,
"Hi Frank Walburg,
My name is David Martinez, and I have an iPod in need of service. I found your web page to be informative, reputable, and reasonably priced.
The problem I'm encountering is the "Folder/Exclamation Point Error". It occurred after trying to sync new music from my PC to my ipod, my computer would not recognize it. Once I ejected it the Folder icon remained. I visited multiple websites concerning this problem, including yours, (yours was the most informative by the way), and they stated it was likely a hard drive issue.
So I decided that it wasn't to difficult to replace myself through online instructional information. I purchased a new hard drive through a US internet dealer based in NH, ocean-electronics. I proceeded to carefully service my ipod myself, removing the original hard drive and replacing it with the new one. Unfortunately to no avail, the folder icon remained, I've been unable to restore it.
I'm unsure if it is a logic board issue or possibly needs a hard drive cable? So before investing any more money into it I'd rather have you run a diagnostic check on it and pinpoint the exact problem. I'll replace the original hard drive back into the ipod and send the new hard drive along also just in case the old hard drive is dysfunctional and can't be repaired."
He sent me both drives, his iPod and $40. I was able to get his original drive to work *and* the new on in his iPod. The important part was that I was "able to repair his repair".
Total cost $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Cathy Ellsaesser sent me an email from Clinton, Mississipi about her 6th Generation video iPod, The message read,
"My kids got me a waterproof case for my ipod for when I swim. I guess i didn't get the case closed properly and it leaked....ipod was on and playing when it got wet. water is public swimming pool salt/chlorine. It didn't get soaked, but water did seep in and i can see some inside the screen.
I would like to send it to you to see if you can fix it.
I will enclose a check with the ipod and mail it today if you think it's worthwhile.
Thanks
Cathy"
I sent back a message telling her what my current rate of success was with a 6th Gen video, which was that I was able to make 14 out of 15 and how to send it in. It arrived a few days later with a check for $40.
A day later I had it all working again perfectly. Total cost for Cathy was $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Tommy Emhoff called me from Kettering, Ohio he had been "repairing" his daughter's Black 5th Gen video iPod
and got lost in the process somewhere. As we were on the phone I sent him instructions about how to send it in.
It arrived as a group of parts, but about everything was there. I found the parts actually all worked but he needed a new battery and he had banged up the face and back plate so those were replaced. The plates were $10, the Battery was $23 and the "repair my self-repair" was $40
Fixed - Total cost $73.
