I got a call from Alvin Hasin who lives in Forestville California (95436) about his iPod.
He runs a Numeric Controlled machine shop that produces small quantity replacements for machines used by other factories in Sonoma County. One of his clients is Traditional Medicinals in Sebastopol and he makes spares for their tea bagging machines.
He has a 5th Gen video iPod and had lost hering in the left side. This is a problem I've fixed many times for other people. The iPod was dropped with the earbuds still plugged in and it landed on the plug, driving it so far into the jack that it snapped off the right side positive connection.
The part was $28 and labor was $40. For an iPod he taken all over the worlrd with him, this was a cheap repair.
Fixed - Total cost $68.

I got a call from Alex Diaz who lives in Lumberton New Jersey (08040).
This was about the time I was getting ready to go to the Coachella Music Festival near Palm Springs. I go to this and do car tent camping.... actually each year there are about 36,000 campers for the three day event and another 40,000 people that drive in each day. It's fantastic. He had gone to Bonaroo in eastern Tennesee one year. They have showers at Coachella, they don't at Bonaroo and it always rains at Bonaroo so you are in mud for three days. Anyway.. I told him how to send it in and I would take care of it when I got back 6 days later.
It arrived while I was away with a note that read,
"Here is a quick synopsis of what happened to my 16Gb 2nd Gen Touch. It really hurts to retell as the ridiculousness seems so avoidable in hindsight. I was weighing myself in the bathroom on a scale adjacent to the toilet. I realized that mY Touch was still in my pocket and in a fit of wanting perfect accuraracy I removed the Touch from my pocket. As I was pulling it out, the Touch slipped out of my hands and into the toilet. (All for that extra 4 ounces) In a panic I pulled it out immediately and my first instinct was to try to turn off the Touch. I was unsuccessful and Touch kept trying to come to life."
Once water is in an iPod, it's effectively "turned on" until the battery is discharged, so there was no way he was going to be able to turn it off.
When it arrived, the LCd was a 'white out'. There was no data painting to the LCD which had its backlight turned on.
Once I replaced the LCD I was able to get all the other aspects of it working again. I was able to tget the battery to charge and dis-charge, and I got its WiFi working perfectly again.
The LCD was $40 and labor/return shipping was $60. The repair was much cheaper than replacement.
Fixed - Total cost $100.
