This case is from Sammamish Washington (98074). It started with an email from Lillian Marino that read,
"Hi Frank,
I dropped my nano (5th gen) in the bathroom sink over a year ago (got it out in 2 seconds).
It has been working but the menu button sticks and I have to depress and hold about three times in different areas of the menu area.
Can you fix this?
If so estimated cost and time?
I would ship USPS priority mail box. Can your mailbox accommodate a box and is it secure?
Thanks,
Lillian"
I sent back that I thought I could help in this and included send it in instructions. It arrived 2 weeks later.
I removed the scroll wheel and heated the assembly so I could separate the parts which are held in place by thermal adhesive. The compass point switches use two concentric metal circles to deliver the switched voltage and a metal dome that when flattened provides the detent "snap" and closes the circuit for a switch.
I had seen this problem before specifically related to a water case and believed the problem was moisture getting between the the three contact points and corroding their surface so they behaved like a dielectric and wouldn't pass current between the points. I took the switch apart and that was the cause.
There are two ways to get the contacts clean again, you can use a Pink Pearl eraser if you have space enough or you need to to scrape the surfaces with the edge of an exacto blade to clean the surfaces again.
In this case I scraped them with a blade.
Total cost to get iPod back working again was $40.
I got this message from Jan Rowley who lives here in Santa Rosa California (95409). It read,
"Hi Frank,
You installed a new battery in my iPod a couple of years ago, and it was great for quite a while. Now, the battery is not holding a charge, and I am suspicious that there is more going on than the battery. If I'm understanding your Pricing on the website, you can do a diagnostics and give me an opinion as to whether there is value in pursuing repair, assuming repair is possible, for about $40. As I have an iPhone, I use the iPod rarely for more than listening to audio books in the car, but my husband may adopt it and would use it for music as well.
I work close to your location, and would pass your place on Wednesday. If that works for you shoot back an email.
Thanks!
Jan Rowley"
It responded back with, "What is your husband using for a phone if not an iPhone?"
And got, "Thanks! I gave him my old flip phone. He has a tablet and isn't really interested in a smart phone . . . yet . . . who knows about the future!"
She dropped it off and I had it working again perfectly without replacing the battery two days later. Total cost for her iPod was $40
