I got an email in response to a Craigslist ad I was running from Aidan Wylde, who lives in Oakland California (92611). The message read,
"Hi there,
I have an iPod classic recent 160 gig model. I am getting an 'your iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred.'
I tried using the system diagnostics but I could only go part-way with them; I could not complete the cycle of checks.
My worst guess is it needs a new hard drive.
The iPod has been little used and not visibly damaged. It was my sister's¦
Do you think you might be able to fix?
Many thanks,
Aidan"
I had him send it up with $40 so I could go through it. In fact it's problem was the hard drive had failed from a drop to a hard surface. The platter inside had shattered.
He went with an 80GB replacement drive bringing the total cost of the repair to $105 well below a $280 replacement cost.

This story comes from 702. It must have started with a phone call because I have no record of a preliminary email that started the case. Out of the blue a package arrived from Heather Mensch who lives in Las Vegas (89179).
Inside the package was an iPod Touch 4th Gen and a note that read, "The iPod was washed in the washing machine. Please email me and I will pay by PayPal."
After I typed that I got a phone call from Heather. She revealed to me that her husband told her to send it to me. I had brought a water immersed device back to life for him in the past. From my side in the conversation things ranged from... "What is Las Vegas going to do when the contract for water delivery from the Colorado River ends in a few years?" (Las Vegas has no aquifer and exists completely from water drawn from the Colo River under contract with states that will lapse soon). No answer there. I also mentioned that I go to Las Vegas each June for Electric Daisy Carnival. I know this always unsettles people. EDC is rave festival and I'm an unapologetic Kandi raver who listens to electronic dance music all day. I also roll and trip at these things. I am the adult face of responsible raving among my friends.
I let her know it was here and the Paypal payment arrived within hours. Two days later I had the iPod working again properly. It's biggest problem was the iPod wouldn't work portably. I could get it to boot up and work and only while it was cabled to power.
To make it work I had to dismantle the battery in the iPod. The battery used in iPods is the same type as used in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and every rechargeable cordless power tool these days. It's a Lithium Polymer battery. These have a voltage regulator board built into them that manages or throttles current in and out of the battery. Heather's VRB had corrosion from the water episode. That corrosion prohibited the needed conductivity into and out of the battery. Once I had it cleaned, the battery worked again.
I had the iPod on the back the next day. Total cost to their 32GB Touch 4th Gen working again.... $60
Bryce Paulson lives in San Francisco Cali (94112). He has a 5th Gen video iPod that had a problem. The device looked well worn out so I had him drop it off with $40, my labor rate to evaluate the iPod.
It's 30Gb hard drive had a mechanical failure. The replacement part drive is $50. While I'm in a repair like this I always look at the appearance of the device. If I can replace really worn faceplates and back plates with little or no cost or effort, I do. If I can make the device look better it's more likely the owner will have an enhanced self esteem and use the device more.
I replaced the backplate with a brand new one and the face plate with one not nearly as scratched.

Total cost to get an iPod back that looked close to factory new.... $90
