This is a story about someone that lives in my area. Elizabeth Poe lives here in Santa Rosa (95404) and had two problems.

Like many she had relied on Windows as an operating system and suffered the standard "catastrophic event" that happens at every 20 to 28 month intervals taking everything of value away permanently.

So the there was two missions:

1) perform a data extraction and file parking, get the files off her 5th Gen Video iPod in such a way that they could be added to her new iTunes Library on her iMac, (yes, like most of us she reached the point where Windows and its problems were more troublesome than the low cost.

2) Her iPod had no way of charging and had no data connectivity

I took the drive out of her iPod and moved it to one of the same vintage and made sure it could read the drive, then ran a program against it to pull a copy of the drive contents. That got mission one complete.

Now, what was the problem with her iPod that it had no USB connection? It turns out she used a cheap car adapter by griffen or Belkin to charge it. When that device failed in use, it permanently destroyed all four USB connections, + 5V, neutral, data transmit and data receive. that rendered the device basically useless.

The fix is replacing the logic board with one that doesn't have smoked USB connections.

Apple actually made three different 5th Gen logic boards. In order to have the drive work correctly without reformatting and moving new copies of songs, I searched for an exact logic board.

With an exact version of the logic board I was able to make her iPod look and work correctly again.

It was $50 for the data extraction and $50 more for the logic board replacement. So for $100 she got her iPod back working perfectly with all of her songs on it *and* on the USB Seagate drive she got a copy of her songs to add to her new iTunes Library again on an operating system that wouldn't cause her future problems.

Greg Garrison is a teacher in Napa California (94558). He teaches at Blue Oak School which is one of two schools in Napa that have basically done away with text books altogether. The other school is the Catholic High School Justin Siena.

One of Greg's kids go to Blue Oak and had dropped the iPad2 that they all use. Another friend of his Tim Schull had mentioned that I repaired his child's iPad 2 so greg brought it to me for repair.

Considering that schools don't give or let kids use lockers at school anymore which leads kids to carry 50 pounds of books in a back pack, it's pretty simple to see that iPads will replace text completely. It's a good use of the device in spite of how many jobs in publishing, truck delivery and retail sales jobs in the text book industry will be lost.

I takes just over two hours to repair an iPad 2. Sometimes the impact changes the shape of the aluminum backplate. When the metal is dented in a way that prohibits the new glass from laying flat back into the backplate, I use a small rotary grinder to cut away the metal so the glass lays flat again. The area that is ground away is rarely noticeable, and frankly most people begin using a case that encloses the area of backplate, bezel and glass edge.

The total cost to get his child's iPad 2 back looking perfect again *and* keep their fingers from getting cut was $108

I got an email from Patrick Di Lollo who lives in Bayville New York (11709). The message read,

"Hello,

I have an older model, iPod Video. The issue with this iPod is that it is not showing up in the computer or iTunes. I have tried just about everything. The iPod holds a charge and works fine but when I plug it into the computer nothing happens.

I am looking for all of the help I can get. Years ago, I DJ'ed and have a ton of music stored on this that is stored nowhere else. I've scoured the internet and think it may be the logic board although I have a feeling I could be wrong.

Please let me know if you've seen this issue and if it is repairable without losing all of the music.

Thanks!"

Apple actually made three different 5th Gen logic boards. In order to have the drive work correctly without reformatting and moving new copies of songs, I searched for an exact logic board. I didn't have exactly the same one, so I was obligated to re-format the hard drive after the board switch.

It was $50 for the data extraction and $50 more for the logic board replacement. For $100 he got his iPod back working perfectly. The songs that were on the iPod I copied over to a USB Flash drive he bought mail order from OfficeMax and had delivered to me. For the record OfficeMax used and enormous box with no interior packing and two pieces of already separated tape. The USB drive with no packing was loose in a box that was 200 times larger than the object being shipped, rattling loose with no end enclosure. The Fed Ex Ground guy handed me the box and actually said, "I have to know what was being sent and if it's even still in there?" It was but......

The total cost for Pat project, getting the data off iPod and replacing the logic board was $100
