I got a phone call from Zeb Gibb who lives in Reno Nevada (89503). During the course of the phone call we discussed a few things. One was her 6th Gen video iPod that had a hearing difficulty, (sound from the right side only).
This is a repair I've done many times. When there are earbuds plugged into an iPod and you drop it in such a way that that it lands on the earbud plug, it will frequently drive the plug far enough into the jack, it will snap off the left side positive positive connection, clean off. That will leave the right side hearing only. This was her problem.
The iPod arrived 4 days later with a check and I had the repair done the same day and it was on the way back the next morning.
Total cost to get *stereo* hearing back? $68
The next story come from Eden Prairie Minnesota (55347).
It's from a previous client whose iPod Touch I had been sent to me 7 months earlier. In that case i wasn't able to get it to work again. However, in explaining why I wasn't able to save the iPod, Margaret Ann learned the right way to manage a water mishap. This time it was the family iPhone 4S. The email from Margaret Ann Erwin read this way,
"Good Morning Frank,
I washed my I phone in the washing machine. I just did it. It has the flash light light on now. I put it in a bag of rice until I can get it to you tomorrow. I have used your wonderful services before. I am in a pickle as my husband is in Afghanistan and this is the number the Military has. Big bummer. So I will get it to you right away in the morning. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime? I think I wrap it in a paper towel and mail it to you in a box with a check for 60.00.
Thanks for your help.
Margaret Ann"
I sent her back an affirmative and send it in instructions. She sent it by Express Mail because she knew (post iPod experience) time is the critical and irreplaceable aspect in this process.
It took a couple of days still for the 'overnight' Express Mail package to arrive. The US Postal Service is in the middle of the 5 or 6 days delivery argument at the moment. They should just reduce all deliveries to 3 days a week, guarantee that first class and Priority gets anywhere in 3 days in the country and make sure Express Mail actually works over night.
Once the 4S was here at noon, I was able to get it working by 7pm and sent her this message of success.
Notice in the photos:
1) there was still water in the phone days later when it arrived and the corrosion where all the plugs and jacks get cinched down. click on that image and you will get a larger detail image.
2) The WiFi works and the phone is looking for cell towers by searching
"I think I have everything working. All the photos and things on the phone are there. I have WiFi connectivity. Your morning alarm goes off.
There is still water trapped in the layers of the LCD. This will go away on its own over time.
What I don't know is whether it will take and make calls. I think will, but I don't have a working micro SIM but it all looks like it would if it did have a working in it.
I'll send it back later today.
Frank"
Total cost to get her $700 phone working and retain all of the data? $60
