I got an email from Kelly Kennedy Adams of Cranston Rhode Island (02910) that read,

"Hello Frank~
I've got a sick 6th Generation black 160GB Ipod classic on my hands. Started with red X in circle. It won't format, can't re-store or go back to factory settings. Messages like, corrupt Ipod, error 1439, could not restore, etc. To add to the problem, my husband got it in his head that he could repair it himself. So after, a few hours or fumbling with it, opening it, tinkering around inside it he realizes he really has no idea what he is doing or even what he is looking for. So he put it back together........ end result .......non-functioning ipod that now has dents and scratches all over the housing.
I'd like to mail it out to you to take a look at and possibly repair.

Sincerely
kelly adams"

We corresponded about it and she sent it in with $40 to have me go through it. It turned out her hard had failed from dropping it once too many times. I sent her these as options,

"I've gone through it and have it basically working again except for the hard drive.

The source of the original (pre-hubby) problem with your iPod is its hard drive.

The device was likely dropped once too many times and the fact that it has a dual platter drive in it added to the problem. Single platter drives are 5 times less prone to problems.

There are three options at this point.

1) replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a single platter 30GB drive (more than enough space really). The drive is $60

2) replace the original 160 GB hard drive with a single platter 160GB drive. The drive is $110

3) not repair it and send it back with a $20 refund

If this were my decision to make, I would go with the 30GB. The larger sizes are rarely needed since the battery fully charged in this iPod will be able to play just 1/25 of the songs if it were fully filled... that's on a 30GB drive and it would only be able to play 1/15 if the 30GB drive were filled with videos. Since it will be cabled to your computer to charge between 15 and 25 times before playing it all once, there is more than enough opportunity to change out the songs on the iPod while it connected to your iTunes Library. Remember the Library is the repository and the iPod player is merely a chalk board that can be changed continually.

If you elect to repair it, you can send the funds through PayPal and I can get it finished and on the way back to you within a day."

She elected to go with the 160GB drive so the repair was $150

Danelle Edwards called me from here in Santa Rosa California (95401) about her husbands iPod. It's a 160GB 6th Generation video iPod.

The iPod is named Pliskan after the character Snake Pliskan in the movie "Escape from New York".

The iPod had been dropped in a soft drink weeks earlier and stopped working. She brought it by and left it off with $40. I took it apart and worked through its difficulties. By the next day I had it working again. I had to replace the LCD and battery which is fairly standard for a citric acid based liquid immersion.

The total repair came to $79 which is way below the $250 plus tax it would cost to replace.
