This is an iPhone 5 through the washing machine story. I got a call from Frank Dotzler, which was a referral from a friend of his that lives here in Santa Rosa.

Frank worked in the computer/tech hardware manufacturing industry earlier in the 1990's but had now moved to Napa and started a winery several years ago. He owns Outpost Wines, which is a 3000 case boutique winery that primarily sells on a direct basis, (which is the most successful way to keep a winery going. It means you ship 'subscriptions' or wine club memberships.)

Frank took his son to the 2013 Superbowl in New Orleans. They had a greta time and met a few luminaries, John Travolta and Emeril Lagasse while dining at one of Emeril's restaurants.

His soon took a number of photos with his iPhone 5 of the weekend. Like a lot of smart phone users, he thought his phone would live forever. Little did he know that his Mom would go toss his sweatshirt in the wash one day *and* it would have his iPhone in it... still.....

I got the call a week after the iPhone went through the washer. Frank had been trying to figure out what to do. Since the phone hadn't been sync'd if they got it replaced at the Apple store, all the photos would be gone forever.

That's where I came in. Data retrieval from and iPhone is something I excel at. I had drive over the hill and leave it with $60. I told him that I'd get back to around 5pm that afternoon with the result.

I'm going to say this, the Dotzler's did all the things that waste time and induce problems. They tried to charge the phone a couple of times and they put it in rice to see if that would make a difference. iPhones will not self-heal and rice won't induce healing post immersion at this time in history. The reason rice can't work as a desiccant is all modern devices use Bluetooth and WiFi. Along with the radio telephone in an iPhone there are three separate types of transmissions that can't interfere with each other. To keep them from interfering, there are soldered over metal radio frequency shielding caps. These minimize interference but make impossible the removal of moisture without dismantling the device completely to clean all the surfaces and contacts.

When you try to charge a battery in a device like this with moisture in it, the battery discharges by electrically arcing at the positive and negative connections to the backlight of the LCD and induces corrosion since the positive connection acts as an anode giving up its metal plating. The detail shot shows the LCD, digitizer and speaker connections. The most corroded one is the LCD connection. Once corrosion starts on any of these plugs it migrates to them like mold. This phone got to me at about the last day it was likely to be saved. There is another detail shot of the logic board side of the connections which shows how corrosion migrates from connection points near one another. Corrosion is the death of the phone not water.

Notice in the final shots we have good WiFi again.

I sent him this message at 5pm,

"We have a working phone and all the files are still safely on it. The photos, the Queens songs. the games all of it. But I did make a back up of the photos in case something else happens. Bring a flash drive with 2GB of empty space for the photos however he can sync them off the phone now."

and got this message back,

"Frank,

You're a STUD!!!! Thank you so much!! My son will be very HAPPY. And his mom will feel much better as well (she was the one who put it in the wash)

I was very careful to stay behind Travolta as you can see. He was in the same restaurant the night before the Super Bowl.

Thank you again. Are there any additional charge?

I will coordinate getting back over to your place as soon as I can.

Thank you. Frank

PS I'd love to bring you a bottle of wine. We make Cab, Zin, Grenache and Petite Sirah and favorites?"

Another life saved and family turmoil minimized for $60.
