I got an email from Matt Velasco who I found out later lives in Spokane Washington (99207).
"Hi Frank,
I wonder if you can help me with my iPod Classic 40Gb. I’d like it repaired if possible. Here are what I believe to be the problems:
Wheel barely works if at all
Battery doesn't hold a charge
Must be plugged in for the window to light up
Is it worth repairing?
Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you.
Respectfully,
Matt"
I replied with "send it in instructions" so it would arrive with my $40 labor rate to tear down and analyze his device.
I got this back from him.
"Frank.
Thanks for the info. I've sent the initial payment today via Paypal. Package to follow this afternoon Priority Mail.
Respectfully,
Matt"
The battery in his iPod had failed. The batteries in all model devices are a Lithium ion battery sometimes called Lithium Polymer or LiPo. When this battery type fails it enlarges. It actually inflates like a pillow. His battery inflated and gained sucj size that it prohibited the center or "select" button fro having and "travel" (movement in and out).
With the battery replaced the Select button worked perfectly again and I sent this message back,
"Replacing the battery solves all the problems. An aging battery in that device expands as it fails and that expanded size is what prohibits the SPST push button travel.
I'll send a PayPal request for $10, cover it and the iPod is on the way back to you on Monday."
It cost a total of $50 to get the iPod he paid $400 for back working again perfectly.
