This is another iPad 2 repair and it started through email. It came from Mike Wambold who is an Information Technology Analyst with County of Sonoma in their Information Systems Department. I t read,
"Good morning Frank,
I work here locally, in Santa Rosa, for the County of Sonoma - Information Systems Department and assist the various County departments with the acquisition and support of technology. As you can probably imagine, I work with a large number of IT vendors. While we are primarily a PC-Windows environment, as with many businesses and government entities, we are seeing an increasing number of iPads coming into the organization. Due to the varying nature of how these devices are acquired, some may or may not include ample warranty coverage (e.g. AppleCare, SquareTrade, etc.). One of our goals is to establish a local resource that we can direct/recommend folks too for repairs that are not covered under an established warranty. Your service offerings looks very promising, not to mention cost effective.
That being said, I have a 2nd generation iPad that is in need of repair. This particular device experienced the inevitable 'drop' and didn't fare so well when meeting the concrete in my driveway J. The screen was shattered and splintered into what I would equate as 'the rock to the windshield'. While the device is still fully functional, at a minimum it needs a screen replacement.
At your earliest convenience, I would like to schedule an appointment to assess the damage and obtain a cost estimate for repair.
Thank you,
Mike"
My reply was,
"Mike
I do work for a few people at the county already... Mike Kennedy, Andrew Parsons, Gary Tabbart, Theresa Marusic, Scott Baker, Jonathon Kajeckes come to mind.
The repair takes 2 hours and the total cost... parts, tax, labor all of it is $108
I have a fairly free schedule, let me know what time works for you.
Frank"
He brought it by a day or so later. It's always fascinating to compare notes with someone in IT. Especially when they work for a large entity that uses Windows as their operating system. Privately every body that works IT knows and says that Windows is an un-reliable operating system but rarely do they fond someone like me that actually vocalize what we all think, which is that "Windows is a frail and lame operating system that shouldn't be used for anything where you have to depend on your computer as a data repository. You really can't scan the horizon of your friends and name anyone that hasn't had one of those catastrophic events that your windows system and everything along with it. But Windows is a great "make work" solution because it keeps under paid IT busy fixing things that should never have occurred."
Characteristic of how things are done with a county government..... his iPad for work (which is what was being fixed) was a 64GB model. There is no need to buy any iPad with memory capacity any larger than 16GB. Two reasons,
1) with iCloud services you can get all of your music/movies and videos streamed in over the WiFi connection
2) Most people charge their iPad using the docking cable and the home computer system. During that charge cycle, it takes just 6 seconds to delete already watched movies and copy over a whole new set.
A day or two later I got this message from him,
"Hi Frank,
Just wanted to thank you again for the repair on my iPad 2. It was also a pleasure getting to know a little bit more about you, and your portfolio of life experiences. You are very knowledgeable and quite the enthusiast in an array of things!
Take care,
Mike"
I had his iPad ready for him the next day. The total cost was $108 and he used PayPal to cover it.
