This project came completely out of the blue and from Malcolm Bowekaty who lives in Albuquerque New Mexico (87120).
I got a package with two iPod Touch models in. One was a 4th Gen with a smashed upper glass and the other was a Touch 1st Gen with a smashed upper glass and smashed LCD. The 1st also needed the battery replaced, which means the old one has to be de-soldered and a new one soldered in.
This project called on me to use the last 1st Gen glass I had still.

This next case involves an iPad 2 from Israel, but it started with a phone call from Davita Ford who lives here in Santa Rosa California (95403).
The iPad belongs to her son who once lived here but went to live for a year in Israel. While there, his iPad was apparently dropped and then run over by a car.
She described what she knew the iPad but with iPads that get run over by a car, in most cases the aluminum backplate becomes concave so a new piece of glass doesn't really fit well *and* that same stretching of the aluminum extends the logic board and frequently damages the laminated layers of the logic board.
I needed to see the device to see if I could repair it cost effectively. If it was just the screen and LCD the repair would be a total of $170 and worth doing. Anything more wrong with it and replacing it would be the way to go.
Once she got it here, I was able to take it apart and test to see if the iPad would work with the LCD and digitizer replaced. It actually did, so we now had a basis for the repair.
The iPad had cartwheeled damaging three corners of the aluminum backplate. The way I deal with metal deformation is to use a grinder and cut away the excess metal that would keep the new glass from laying flat. I learned metal working from my father who is a noted metal sculptor in California.
These are detail shots of the three corners that had to be shaved a bit.
And the finished iPad working perfectly once repaired and the total cost was $170.
