I got a call from Joe Perea who lives in Petaluma California (94954).
He teaches at the Santa Rosa Junior College in the Music Department. we had a great conversation about his iPad and a host of things in the initial phone call. He brought his iPad 2 up to me to get it repaired the next day.
It was a fairly standard repair, there were a couple of the corners that were damaged but I was able to use a small grinder and eradicate those problems and the new piece of glass laid down perfectly. The upper glass used in iPads is flame tempered glass which you are more familiar with as the material used for passenger car door windows. When the backplate has changed shape from the fall, you can't refashion the new glass to fit. That new piece of glass will just blow to pieces so grinding away the metal that is problematic is your only real choice.
This is the standard way I deal with that problem, however most people that repair iPads try to bend them back and it never leads to a smooth glass laying in properly. I have three photos of one of the corners needing this done. In the first one you can see how it's obvious the new glass will never lay into the backplate. In the second one you can see how the metal was removed. In the third one you can see how the glass lays flat and there is very little to notice about the previous damage.
Joe hung out with me while I finished his iPad and it gave us a chance to discuss Digital Audio Work environments. I'm someone that imagines I can become the next world famous DJ. The reason I think that is I have a great sense of "Good House" and know what great Vocal Trance is a style. I live two blocks from the Junior College and had considered attending the summer session *but* they taught ProTools only as a DAW. ProTools (DigiDesign) has been made irrelevant by Native Instruments "Ableton 9" and Apple's Logic 9.
Joe and I discussed how people first listen to and appreciate music. It was a great moment.
The total cost of the iPad repair was $108
