This next case started a bit differently than most. I got a package with two iPod Touch 4th Gen's in it. Also in the package was $120 in cash and a note card that read,
"Frank,
They've *both* been laundered now. You saved the Red one once before, hope you can do it again.
Jenny Perkins"
Jenny lives and works in Huntsville Alabama (35801) where she is a dentist there. I had the two iPods here for 10 days while I tried to get them both working. The Red one was the problem.... the one put through the wash once before wasn't driving the LCD's backlight for the first few days, but I kept at it and got it working finally.
These are photos of the work in progress and the finished iPods working again.
Yes, people trust me with their iPod repair enough to send them into me with cash because they know they will get them back again.
Total cost for both iPods $120.
I got an email from Walter Aab who lives in Oakland California (94602) that read
"Hello,
Hope you are having a good day :-)
I'd like to inquire about my Mac Book Pro. Last Sunday I accidentally dropped 1/2 a glass of wine on top of the keyboard (the machine shut off by itself right away). I immediately tilted it to the side, dabbed it with a couple of napkins and let it dry. After an hour or so I tried turning it on but it will not come back (I could hear the processor's fan working).
I took the laptop to the 'genius bar' in the apple store yesterday and they told me they would need to replace the logic board and the 'upper part of the laptop' which includes the keyboard and in the latest mac laptops is just one whole piece
I would like to know if you could possibly take a look at it and fix it, and how much do you think it would cost.
It is a 15 inch Mac book Pro
OSX (I bough it mid 2012 so it is one of the latest)
I was advised to back-up my hard-drive by going to Radio shack and buying a caddy for the hard drive and then transferring all my files to another hard drive. I could do this right away should you have time to see the computer this weekend.
I live in Oakland, Ca and drive to Santa Rosa from time to time when I go wine tasting, so I would have no problem driving the laptop to you.
Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Walter Aab"
He had heard about me from friends in the computer field... I think that I had helped in the past. Somehow they had convinced her I *was* the one person that could do this job of getting the laptop working perfectly again.
I explained that I needed the laptop, it's wall adapter (so I could charge the battery as needed) and $185 to be engaged in the project. He was fine with that and set Saturday , two days later as the time they would bring it by.
On Saturday Walter's girlfriend Marzy and her friend Hanna stopped by with the laptop and we had some great conversation while they were here. It turns out the laptop was in fact hers, not Walters. He had just been using it when things wrong. Naturally... as with every client I meet this way she was a bit anxious about when I would have her laptop working again. That's the interesting part... everyone just assumes I'm going to be able to make it work again. In fact I only make them work again about 75% of the time. In 1 out of 4 cases the laptop mother board is permanently destroyed because the fluid pools in the top right corner of the keyboard where the LCD plugs into the motherboard. That connection is the most susceptible to damage when the owner keeps trying to charge the battery and try to the laptop. When the charging occurs with liquid still there it actually destroys the LCD backlight connection.
In her case I got it working again 2 days later and was able to send this message.
"MarZ,
We have a working laptop but the battery was damaged by the liquid's acidity and has to be replaced. Rather than have me order in the part and do this (which will take 5 to 10 days) I'd rather send you a link of what to buy and teach you (when you are here), how to replace it. It's dead simple.
The battery costs about $70
This way you can use the laptop while plugged in with the wall adapter until the battery arrives.
Frank"
She replied,
"Frank! Wonderful news thank you so much! I agree, I'll order the battery and you can show me how to install, etc. Walter and I can come by to pick up the computer on Sunday whenever you are available."
Total cost to get her laptop back working perfectly was $185 from me and $70 for the replacement battery, (which she was going to need to do in the next year anyway>
+++ Update, this did not turn out as I thought. I hadn't encountered. When they got the battery and Walter made the replacement, it still didn't work without having to be plugged into the wall adapter. I sent them back a refund of half of the $185 or $92.50 for a 'failed attempt at repair".
