i got a call from Wille Gonsalvez who lives here in Windsor California (95492) and is known by friends as "Wille G".

His daughter had dropped her iPhone 4S in the toilet a week earlier and wanted to know if I could fix it.

I'm always cautious about promises, one of my more important tasks is managing people's expectations. When he described what had occurred in detail, I told him I thought I could make positive difference in his set of circumstances.

During that conversation he revealed that he had called me two weeks earlier with another problem. In that case his iPad 2 had been run over by a car. In my recent experience I've had three iPad 2's brought to me run over by cars. In two of the cases everything about the iPad was destroyed enough that replacing the LCD and screen alone wouldn't make a difference, their logic boards were also damaged. In the third case both the LCD and the screen had to be replaced, I did a good job on it and the $170 repair cost was a great price but for $80 more Apple would have replaced the whole device. On the phone I told Wille it would be a better approach for him to replace it though it would cost marginally more.

In that earlier phone call about the iPad he thought I was indifferent to helping him, he didn't realize I was giving solid advice. Not heeding the advice, he called someone else... actually it was iCracked and the job was done quite poorly. The iCracked sub-contractor made a 'passing' effort to at making the folded metal corners lay flat. He showed me the iPad and I could see the new screen was already lifting off and was going to separate from the backplate completely at some point in the near future. He felt trapped at that point because he knew he wasn't likely to:

1) get a refund for poor iCracked work
2) get iCracked to do the work properly

He wasn't happy about the result, but he could see I had given good guidance. I started to discuss with him how superb the iPad Mini was and that friends of mine are now using them while they drive to FaceTime with friends. Yes, using the Verizon data network, they tip it up on their steering column in front of the speedometer in their car.

Phone shots after:

Okay so let's get back on the iPhone dropped in the toilet.... this is a standard repair for me. I had the phone here for a day and got it working again perfectly.

Total cost to get the $650 phone working? $60
