Jim Watters lives here in Santa Rosa (95404) and got a hold of me to replace the battery in his iPod Touch 1st gen.
The Touch models are engineered with the intent they never be repairable. They are expected to have things fail at about 2 1/2 to 3 years so the parts meant to wear out at that rate. from time to time someone treats theirs more delicately than Apple had imagined and their iPod does become a candidate for repair.
The battery in most modern devices is a Lithium Polymer type. In theTouch 1st Gen that battery is soldered into place and then bonded to the iPod with thermal adhesive.
The solder is high temp and I use a Metcal re-work station to work o these. Notice I also don't clip the leads off at the logic board and then try to re-solder them back down again. The proper way to manage this is to snip the leads from the battery and then strip them. Then cut and slide shrink wrap tubing over what will be the joint between the two wires. Solder the wires together and then hit the tubing with heat gun.
Total cost for this was $75
