Scott Dunham lives here in Santa Rosa, California.
He found he had hearing only the left side of the earbuds on his 5th Generation video iPod and brought it down to the Apple Store in the Santa Rosa Plaza shopping mall.
The Apple Geniuses explained that it wasn't repairable and he needed to trade it in for 10% off ($25) on a new one priced at $250.
I'm sure a lot of people fall for that manipulation. It's clearly the road to Apple profitability and a cynic might think the people working there are keeping score between themselves about how many people they tricked into this very poor trade-in value. Scott didn't accept the offer and went home to think about it. Using the internet he found me... within walking distance of his home.
He left it off at noon and came back at 4pm the same day to pick it up fixed.
The headphone jack part was $28 and labor was $40. For $68 he got his iPod back
working and with all of his songs on it.
Fixed - Total cost $68.

Patrick Sullivan called me from Washington DC.
He had seen me on the internet and gave me a call to find out about sending his 5th Generation video iPod into have the headphone jack replaced. He recalled dropping his iPod and then the hearing for the right side never worked again.
I sent an email discussing the specifics of sending it in. Use a padded mailer, be sure to include your name, address, email address and phone number and include a check for $68.
It arrived a few days later on a Saturday. The repair was finished the same day and the iPod was on the way back Monday.
His iPod had a few bands I hadn't heard before, now I am a Breaking Benjamin fan.
The headphone jack was $28 and the labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $68.
