Cindy Lo called me from Rohnert Park, California
to get some understanding about why her 5th Gen 80GB video iPod wasn't charging or holding a charge. It was fairly clear in short order that the problem was a failed USB data and power connection in her docking port. I asked the all important question, "what type of docking station are you using?" and she told me the make.

It was kind of a leading question. Even though the 30 pin docking connection has 2 Firewire power connections, from the 5th gen video/1st gen Nano all iPods rely on the Universal Serial Bus to make data and power connections. All docking stations use only USB because it's the 100% bet for them.

When the docking station fails it takes the USB connections on the iPod with it and her docking station smoked the USB part of her logic board completely.

She needed a new logic board but I gave a few options. She could trade in downtown at the Apple store for 10% off, I could buy it needing repair, or she could have me replace the logic board.

After making sure that it wasn't covered by an Apple warranty, she called me and said to go ahead withe the logic board replacement.

The part was $90 and labor was $40 but the iPod was a Christmas gift from her brother two years ago and she liked getting it back with all of her music files on it. I also performed a data extraction and parked all of her music in a separate folder on the iPod so she could add them back to her current iTunes Library. Previously her Library was on her sister's Windows based Dell laptop and as Windows always does... it had a catastrophic failure and took all of her files with it. To her way of looking at, I saved her life.

Fixed - Total cost $130.

Katie Waters of Saint Augustine, Florida found me on the internet
because she was looking for a way to manage that her daughter's 6th Gen 80GB video iPod had spent a moment or two in the Atlantic ocean. She called me from Saint Augustine Florida where she lives a bit desperate. I told her I not had any real success until recently with salt water cases. Every instance except the most recent one had ended in self-esteem sapping defeat, but she persisted and we agreed she should send it in.

I got here and had some fairly earnest problems, but I was to work through them all except one which was the corrosion to her headphone jack/hold lock switch. That part needed to be replaced. She sent the funds in using PayPal (for the first time). All of her files remained intact and the drive, battery and LCD worked.

I was able to get her iPod back to working health with a $35 part and the $40 labor/return shipping.

Her daughter Hope was thrilled, $75 to get her baby back to life and working perfectly again.

Fixed - Total cost $75.

Mike Dunne from State College, Pennsylvania
emailed me one day in late July asking me to send him an iAmbulance for his 80GB 5th Gen iPod.

The iPod arrived back here on August 6th 2008 and it took a day to get to analyzing his iPod's problem. There was no sound coming from the docking connection or the earbud jack. This symptom indicates the logic board has become de-laminated. The 5th Gen logic board actually is made from 5 layers of phenolic board with traces between the layers to deliver the signal to the discreet parts on the upper and lower surface. In Mike's case the logic board de-lammed after the analog signal was derived but before it hit the amplifying stages of the iPod.

He used PayPal to send in the needed $90 for the part and $40 for the labor/return shipping.

Fixed - Total cost $130.
