Mary Hicks emailed me from Spring, Texas
one morning reading,
"Hello Frank,

I saw your website while looking for a way to fix my son's iPod and decided to contact you for help!

We have a 5th Gen. 30gb iPod that was left outside in the rain (about 1 å? years ago). Right after it happened we tried to get it fixed at the ipod store, but they only wanted us to by a new one.

Since it was dead and decided to try to take it apart to fix it. I managed to get it apart, clean off all the connections and put it back together ‰ÛÒ almost like new. I was able to charge it up but was not able to do anything once it came on. I put it away hoping to do something with it and now 1 å? years later I'm hoping to get it fixed. It still charges and goes to a menu screen, but I can't get it to do anything else.

I think it's the scroll wheel, but I'd like to send it to you for your expert opinion!

Please let me know if you might be able to help and I'll send it to you right away! Thanks in advance for your help!"

I sent the specifics of how to send it in and it arrived a few days later. I was able to get all the parts working in her iPod *after* a year and a half except the logic board. I wasn't able to get the buttons of the scroll wheel to work on it.

The logic board was $90 and labor/return shipping was $40.

When she got it back, she sent me this message,

"Good Morning Frank,

Wanted to let you know we received the iPod yesterday and wanted to thank you for your quick turn-around.

I'm sure you've heard this many times from other customers, but we thought our iPod was long gone, until I found your web site. Apple has created a very expensive, disposable device that they cannot or will not repair. It seems their only purpose is to sell an iPod, wait for it to break and sell another one to the customer. After spending so much for one iPod, I was NOT going to buy another!

We are so happy we found you and that you were able to bring our iPod back to life. You have made one teen-ager and his mother very happy!!!

Thanks again!

Mary Hicks"

Fixed - Total cost $120.

Jeff Lanahan emailed me one day from Waterford, Michigan
one day saying, "I put a power jack connection into my earphone connect on my ipod like an idiot. The ipod works but the sound in the ear buds is horrible. To install a new head jack ‰ÛÒ what is the charge?"

I was fairly clear what the problem was. I've seen this when some people at the YS Coast Guard Station tried to use an iPod as a music hold device for a 24 volt phone system and botched the wiring. This destroyed the two output capacitors in the power amplifier's final audio amplifying stage. This is repairable only by replacing the logic board. I responded back,

"This isn't a jack problem, this is really a logic board fired problem. The jack wouldn't be influenced by power running back through it, but the output amplifiers on the logic board would be. I don't believe this is fixable cheaply."

He sent it in anyway and used to send in the $40. I was right. The two shots show what these caps should look like (with the orange tops) and the two crisp ones he had. He elected not to get it repaired.

Michael Plagge called me from Union City, California
which is about 110 miles south and east of Santa Rosa. He had a camera and an iPod that he needed to me to look at.

The camera seemed to operate correctly by the time he got here so we let that go and went onto the iPod that needed repair which is a 5th Gen video. It had a railed drive which I replaced and while I was at Michael decided to get a new battery also.

The drive was $60 and the battery was $23 with labor at $40. The device looks and works perfectly now.

Fixed - Total cost $123.
